Porto route via bike

Happy Monday, pelegrinos! I have a question on the Porto-Santiago route. My husband and I are planning on riding it (bike) in April of next year.
Based on what I understand there are two routes: internal and costal. Is this right? I also understand that the Coastal is more recommended for bikes, is this true? Is the Costal route on the road? Are these busy roads/express ways? If you have done this, please share your experience. Thank you!

Hi Flavia! You're right - there are two routes, which merge towards SdC. I have only walked the inland route, back in 2011. I think you will find that neither routes are on "busy roads/express ways". I wish you 'buen camino' for April. I only wish my health permitted me to walk another one! God bless you both ....

Yes two routes. Which merge.
I did the interior (central) route. I believe there is actually three routes.

I walked the central route this May. Some walking on the highway.

BE EXTREMELY careful riding on the highway! Some had no, and I mean no, shoulder at all. Even walking I had to step into the ditch or straddle it until fast moving trucks went by.

Two places I elected not to take the "suggested" route. And walked what looked like the faster highway route. Wrong. Very dangerous.
Drivers in Portugal are very aggressive and drive very fast.

You could bike the route. But there are parts that you will be walking the bike.

Go to the Portuguese room on this forum. Many have posted their blogs biking this wonderful route.

Sorry, there's actually 4 routes: the Senda (by the water), the Coastal, the Central, and the Interior. The Central is the busiest. If you look at Luis Freixo's excellent website which describes in detail all the routes and has accompanying maps, there is a Senda route which is suitable for wheelchairs, which should be a good route for your bicycles... http://www.caminador.es/
