Vigo to SDC - Sept. 2023, Porto to Vigo - 2024
Hi

We just finished Vigo to Santiago last week and are now planning our next Camino. Since we got our Compostela, I don't care about getting another one but I'm thinking I would like to plan Porto to Vigo - then bus from Vigo to Santiago. We want to experience the coast part from Porto to Baiona. My question to those who have experience - is the infrastructure for hotels in the coastal cities fairly good. I did pre-book our last trip and we are doing hotels with bag transfer. Just from my basic research it seems that the accommodations are not as abundant as on the central route. Any thoughts?

thanks

These are seaside resort areas with varied hotel options. Gronze lays them out in good detail. In the summer of 2022 my wife and I stayed in hotels nightly. Because we went in August, we pre-booked, especially for weekends. Viana do Castelo, Vila Praia da Ancora, A Guarda (especially recommended; the Hotel Monumento Convento de San Benito and harborside seafood restaurants are memorable), the green glass rocks by the Hotel Talasso Atlántico, Baiona, and the Vigo beach suburb of Nigran are all especially pretty and offer options for days of varying length. We enjoyed the earlier stretch of boardwalks going north from Vigo, Vila do Conde, and Póvoa de Varzim too. The Axis Ofir Beach Resort Hotel on a striking piece of coast across the river from Esposende requires 2-4 extra kms of walking (depending whether you eat there or walk into Fão), but the dunes, long beach and rough surf were very beautiful. Of course Vigo has great seafood and architecture.

Thanks for that,
I see some varying routes when I google them and some turn inward fairly quickly. Do you have a particular route that you recommend that would see us doing a max of 25K on any given day? I would like to stay to the coast as much as possible.

This was our stages and prebookings in 2018. I would try somewhere different in Caldas de Rei, highly recommend our accommodation in Oia.

I also highly recommend Casa Puertas in Oia. Outstanding accommodations and breakfast in a beautiful little village.

We did Porto to Santiago this year, booked ahead and also had baggage transfer. Used Pilbeo for transfer (5-star!) and they helped occasionally when we were stumped for accommodation. Walked in April - had no trouble finding paces to stay.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Walked from Porto to Santiago via coast this past April/May. Had no problems securing desired accommodations. Would also highly recommend Smiling Places bed and breakfast in Labruge. Outstanding hosts.

We did exactly the same. First walk Vigo to SDC via spiritual variante, then returned and did Porto to Vigo along the coast all the way. From Vigo we got the train to SDC then got a bus to Cee and walked to Finisterre. It was great. No problem with accommodation. Did tend to book a night or two in advance.
Next week doing central route Porto to SDC.
Enjoy!!
