Several options in Cercedilla - but I doubt you’ll be ‘doubling the distance of the usual leg out of there. So i started out on the madrid route at 6:00 today, got to tres cantos around noon. got my credentials stamped but had to fork 50 euros on a hotel room. started emailing ahead to places in manzanares and cercedilla but as i feared all the cheap hostels are booked. so i cried a bunch (not really, more just complained to myself) and got some sleep. i realized ok, what i like about this, walking, what i don’t like, stressing out competing with other travelers and holidays for places to stay that are cheap. solution: start walking at 3:00 am and double my distance so when i get twice as far i have the allowance to throw on a hotel room and i don’t have to scrape lists on the app or gronze.com. so anyways we will see how that goes. i feel more confident just eye balling hotels when i reach a town rather then looking for the “cool” hostel to stay at that is more then likely already booked up.
sup henry,Several options in Cercedilla - but I doubt you’ll be ‘doubling the distance of the usual leg out of there.
Options are then fewer until Medina de Rioseco and thereafter OK.
I’d be interested in your view as to whether you’re competing for accomodation with others walking the Camino, or just with peak Spanish holiday time?
Sorry - you missed my point - I’m interested in why it’s so busy - are there a significant number walking the Camino de Madrid?sup henry,
i don’t think it really matters exactly who i am competing with, i think the point is by doubling my distance i increase my allowance to where i can stay thereby allowing me to fork on a hotel room for the evening.
in all reality i am not doing this to make friends. this is my heroes journey abyss to better look within myself. chasing the “experience” seems to be losing sight of the point as it is defined per me.
namaste
i emailed them but they said they are booked until the 22nd.If you wanted to stop in Manzanares, Ray y Rosa have a little cabin out back just for pilgrims.

weird, i came to that conclusion in my original post, almost like you didn’t finish reading before posting or something…You are missing the point of walking the Camino. It is not supposed be an experience in travel torture and a quest for the next place to spend the night, it is a spiritual endeavor.
Starting at 3am seems a bit extreme to me!So i started out on the madrid route at 6:00 today, got to tres cantos around noon. got my credentials stamped but had to fork 50 euros on a hotel room. started emailing ahead to places in manzanares and cercedilla but as i feared all the cheap hostels are booked. so i cried a bunch (not really, more just complained to myself) and got some sleep. i realized ok, what i like about this, walking, what i don’t like, stressing out competing with other travelers and holidays for places to stay that are cheap. solution: start walking at 3:00 am and double my distance so when i get twice as far i have the allowance to throw on a hotel room and i don’t have to scrape lists on the app or gronze.com. so anyways we will see how that goes. i feel more confident just eye balling hotels when i reach a town rather then looking for the “cool” hostel to stay at that is more then likely already booked up.
i was thinking about that. i have a mat and blanket.Could you buy a small tent and a mat? Maybe you could use that some nights? I have sometimes slept in church porches. Just a suggestion.
i think you are right. i am going to start at 6 and use my halfway location to re up on water and charge my electronics. (i have a battery for this). as long as i am cycling water the heat does not bug me so doing a second push seems ok. will test tomorrow.Starting at 3am seems a bit extreme to me!Maybe half an hour before sunrise would be more manageable? That’s what I do when it’s really hot (my first week from Pamplona, temperature was 38 /39 deg. - in June!).
i know some people do like to walk at night, in which case ignore me

I know the feeling and shock. I got the last available room in town one afternoon. A suite at 90€. Nice place but the bed wasn't worth it. I think I got full value though when considering all that I ate at the very fancy breakfast buffet. So i started out on the madrid route at 6:00 today, got to tres cantos around noon. got my credentials stamped but had to fork 50 euros on a hotel room.
Ooh yes, that's a wonderful stop and the room really super - and the bathroom quite luxurious. If you wanted to stop in Manzanares, Ray y Rosa have a little cabin out back just for pilgrims.

I finished the Madrid last week and didn't see any others walking the Camino. So reckon it must be a combination of many places are still shut + holiday-makers.Several options in Cercedilla - but I doubt you’ll be ‘doubling the distance of the usual leg out of there.

Not for everyone. Different goals you knowYou are missing the point of walking the Camino. It is not supposed be an experience in travel torture and a quest for the next place to spend the night, it is a spiritual endeavor.
i am good, got 1.5 liters of water left. going to lay on a bench for an hour and charge my phone then push towards cercedilla.
Great strategy. I can't think of anything worse than being pressured into early starts or very long days just to try to compete for the cheapest beds. That competitive element, against other pilgrims, would spoil it for me. The competition I want is to test myself physically against the path, but to mentally have the burden of chasing a cheap sleep removed.
I have gotten full value many a time on impressive, fancy, "free"I think I got full value though when considering all that I ate at the very fancy breakfast buffet.
When we walked this two years ago, we had the benefit of a walker three days ahead of us who advised of albergues along the way available and desirable. This gave us peace of mind and worked well, even though we sometimes pushed on. There was a walker three days behind us and we provided the same service. I wish all peregrinos would use Ivar to provide this service.

I think that he's already on a less popular route! I think that @Calisteve has the reason why there is a lack of accommodations.Did you consider jumping on a bus or train and heading to a less popular Camino?
I finished the Madrid last week and didn't see any others walking the Camino. So reckon it must be a combination of many places are still shut + holiday-makers.
Thank you, in Gronze we update the information in a maximum time of 24 hours after we have knowledge. If the pilgrims tell us, everything is easier and better updated.Just wondering if you checked up to see the situation regarding albergues and hotels before you began your camino? I see you referenced Gronze in a comment. Gronze seems to do a very good job of keeping us up to date on openings/closings. I am not sure if you did look at this why you would be stressing over the pricing when you can see virtually all the municipals and donativos are closed at this time. I will be walking the VDLP and similar to the Camino Madrid there are much fewer options. Fortunately there are many more affordable options open at this time. If things changed dramatically I would probably switch caminos as I am a budget pilgrim also and would find staying in hotels most nights a strain on my wallet and also not the way I enjoy doing my caminos.
gonze.com has been a great resource and i constantly use it to asses distance and initial room and board. thank you for maintaining it!Thank you, in Gronze we update the information in a maximum time of 24 hours after we have knowledge. So glad to be able to say ¡gracias! rather than only thinking it. Gronze is a treasure.in Gronze we update the information in a maximum time of 24 hours after we have knowledge. If the pilgrims tell us, everything is easier and better updated.

A bit more shade.nap time…
A sleeping pad is as important, because you can always use a church porch in a pinch for shelter.go buy a tent tomorrow
Plural? With the kind of days you've been walking?packs

Chapeau...you're fit.
Good on you, and buen camino, peregrino!
So excited that you are there… Most structurally intact remaining aqueduct of the Roman Empire… the Alcazar Segovia, the last Gothic style church built in Europe, and the *castle*.booked 2 nights in segovia, looks like a cool town and i will need the r&r to rest and recover.
it is very awesome here! i am staying to wednesday now because i had to order a tent. not much to recommend on food, i always go to the grocery store, buy a loaf of bread, deli meats, fruit and water. i have gotten used to eating like that.So excited that you are there… Most structurally intact remaining aqueduct of the Roman Empire… the Alcazar Segovia, the last Gothic style church built in Europe, and the *castle*.
PLease tell us if it’s every bit as wonderful as I’ve seen in photos. Planning/hoping that I will be there Jan 3/4… maybe 5 (this is all weather dependent). I’ll take any food recommendations, and accommodation thoughts.

Great photos, keep them coming!if anyone else is planning two stages in one day pls bring water and sip it. also take breaks to refresh your body and muscles. lunch is a must!
Wonderful. It is the Lupa Capitolina, Romulus ans Remus being suckled by a she-wolf. They later went on to found Rome (it's a long story that is anything but funny).this statue made me
That’s also a good strategy for covid times. I plan to eat outside or in my room on my hoped-for camino in a few weeks. But for anyone like @Faye Walker who does want a restaurant recommendation, I can heartily recommend this sephardic restaurant, El Fogón Sefardí. As I looked for the restaurant information, I saw that this place also has a hotel connected in some way. Looks nice but too high end for the average pilgrim budget, I think.not much to recommend on food, i always go to the grocery store, buy a loaf of bread, deli meats, fruit and water. i have gotten used to eating like that.
the photos took my breath away.this statue made me
If you do decide to splurge on food ... Restaurante Jose Maria for some cochinillo. There were also some very large white beans that I had in a soup that were local to Seqovia. Lastly, I stopped in a bar a few doors down from Jose Maria that had great free tapas with a copa.it is very awesome here! i am staying to wednesday now because i had to order a tent. not much to recommend on food, i always go to the grocery store, buy a loaf of bread, deli meats, fruit and water. i have gotten used to eating like that.
I booked a reservation for tomorrow at 9:00. going to splurge on the 32 euro dinner because it has everything you were talking about! If you want a big meal of roast sucking pig or beef, and the beans and vegetables that accompany them, etc., Asador Maribel, on the uphill side of the aqueduct at Av. Padre Claret, 16, has great food, and the outdoor seating has wonderful views.

@VNwalking said: "Wonderful. It is the Lupa Capitolina, Romulus ans Remus being suckled by a she-wolf. I will never be able to escape doing IT work, even in other countries,
Any info on those large white beans? I did not see them anywhere else other tan Segovia.here we go…
Happy full moon!last nights wandering…
I am not sure, first place i have ever seen them in my entire life!Any info on those large white beans? I did not see them anywhere else other tan Segovia.
JudionAny info on those large white beans?
Thanks. I am going to try to source some locally and give that recipe a try.
Not to get into a heated bean dispute,
No. You are taking it up the beanstalk into the clouds.I truly apologize for continuing to take poor @paulgeis’s live thread down the bean rabbit hole.
I can't wait to try this dip recipe! I love dips, I love simple (read lazy), and I love most beans! This is a delicious and super simple recipe. It looks like what you had at the fancy dinner, minus the jumbo beans. Canned butter beans that you can buy at any US grocery store work just fine. It’s definitely become a favorite. (I have always used a bit of onion in place of the shallot and smoked, Spanish-style paprika.)
As someone who has bedded down in a church porch on bare flagstones in a light sleeping bag I would say a mat is important, I managed without that night but had a broken night's sleep. The sound of a nearby bar opening early was music to my ears, 3 cafe con lechas later I hit the road/way with a spring in my stepA sleeping pad is as important, because you can always use a church porch in a pinch for shelter.
With luck that will mean food will be abundant, as will places to stay. You know. Like what happens when you prevent rain by putting on raingear...shelter ready, picked up food for 48 hrs…
i grabbed a loaf of bread, sliced chorizo, fruit and water. i got my pop up tent today and tested it out. plus the universe is looking out for me, any challenge is in my way to learn and any easy accomplishment is there as reward…With luck that will mean food will be abundant, as will places to stay. You know. Like what happens when you prevent rain by putting on raingear...
Buen camino, peregrino!
paulgeis, found another pilgram! were taking a break.
i am with Sintija from iceland. we are in nava right now looking for a usb charger for her. i spent the night in my tent last night and we both managed to book rooms in coca.paulgeis,
Nice pics. I assume that you have left Segovia but where were these taken?
Hope tomorrow is another good day for you. Carpe diem!
Spoiler alert @paulgeis - if you don't know! At Coca I almost don't want to mention .... the very extraordinary castle there that I was totally not expecting. Except to warn you, in case you did not know, so you allow yourself some extra time. And some good picture for us please.i am with Sintija from iceland. we are in nava right now looking for a usb charger for her. i spent the night in my tent last night and we both managed to book rooms in coca.
