Should I start from Leon or closer to Santiago? Can do 130 m

Hi,
I have two weeks to do a leg of the Camino and am not sure where to start. I recon that I can walk about 10 miles a day. Should I start from Leon or closer to Santiago? I am a woman in my late 50's and I have been wanting to do the camino for a long time. I have just been given the opportunity to go and frankly don't know where to begin! Are there hostels every 10 miles or so along the way? Where should I fly to and from? Please advise. I will leave next week! My Birthday treat. I am bit nervous and very happy.

Hi Sue from Norfolk!

Leon is around 200 miles to Santiago, so that would be pushing it a bit. You could consider starting somewhere like Ponferrada (around 130m), which is also reasonably well connected.

There is plenty of accommodation along the way.

On flights, I suspect you'll be best going from Stansted to Santiago on Ryanair and taking the bus from there.

Browse around the forum for ideas! Buen Camino!

Ponferada, no doubt. There's a night bus from Madrid airport.
10 miles? you'll walk more then that considerning day light hours, I would say you can do around 20 km every day.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi Sue,
Similar to the query I had in my mind - I'll also have 14 walking days available, so how far can one reasonably go?
I'd imagine it would be different for everyone and I suppose if the worst came to the worst there would be buses, trains & taxi's as a 'bail-out' stragegy? My own approach is to do as much preparation & training as reasonably possible now, planning to set a comfortable pace initially & build on that! My (part) Camino starts on 1st June, really looking forward to it! & good luck with your Camino!

Ponferrada sounds a good plan; when are you thinking of going. There was a very beautiful Wisteria in flower when were there :D

We did 12miles a day took 13days from Astorga, we were not fit enough either. It's fun planning, keep us uptodate Sue

Leon to Santiago takes fourteen days. Segments can be done on a bus if you "fall behind." You will have some fairly easy terrain for two to three days, then you hit the mountains to the Iron Cross.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I agree wih the posters who've recommended starting a little closer. Walking 15 miles is one thing, doing it every day for two weeks is a whole different thing. And the Camino is much more enjoyable if you don't feel time-pressured.
