Sleeping Bag vs Liner only

Hi Brian.....my friend and I have just walked stage 3 of the Camino (Leon to Santiago) we're in our 60's, had limited knowledge of the Camino. We ensured our backpacks were not overr 6.5kg so left sleeping bags behind and only took our silk liners. Soooo pleased we didnt take sleeping bag, because all we needed was the liner - the dorms are warm enough and even on the odd occasion when there were no blankets provided (as we arrived at the Alburgues late) we only needed liner and a couple of times just covered ourselves with our poncho, we certainly were not cold (and I always feel the cold). Dont overthink the Camino and if you havent taken enough clothing or sleeping bag and need to buy, there are plenty of shops and supermarkets selling just what you need and at very reasonable prices.

I think that some light sleeping bag is always a good choice! You never know..

I took a down quilt in addition to my liner. It packed down smaller than a sleeping bag and gave me that extra bit of warmth if I needed it (usually, I didn't)

I have done several walks in September with just a nylon liner. I like to be a bit cool when I sleep. There were blankets whenever I needed them.

If you like to sleep warm, the sleeping bag is a good choice.

I have walked from Leon to SDC in September with a one season sleeping bag and was fine. Last year I walked from SJPP to Leon starting in mid-August then skipped over to the Primitivo and was cold most night with my merino wool liner. My husband was fine most nights with his merino liner. People are different.. we have central air in our home and keep it around 74F in summer and 72F in winter. If I am stilling around in my home, I am often wrapped in a quilt and wear a sweater and slippers......

Why don't you try sleeping in your liner at home as a test run? If you are comfortable then the liner will be ok, if you are cold then you need to take a sleeping bag or more clothes...

On my Sarria to SDC Camino in early May, I used a light flannel bag that I used more as a blanket. On one night I used it with my silk liner, but it was too warm. Best of all the flannel bag was only $20. I will use this combo on my next Camino.
