Starting in Triacastela

Time of past OR future Camino
planning now for May (2018)
Hey everyone! I am preparing to embark on my first el camino experience this may! My head is swirling with thousands of questions, but to begin I was wondering if it was possible to get public transportation to Triacastela from either the airport in Santiago or the one in Madrid? I only have 6-7 days this time around, but want to do as much as I can. Hoping that starting in Triacastela will be a good fit. Also open to other ideas for starting locations. I will be traveling with my three sisters and we are all newbies so we can use all the advice we can get! thanks!

a follow up question as well... once I arrive in Spain how much time should I provide for traveling to the starting point?

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Hello and welcome.
This website can give you some more detailed info regarding travelroutes.
Bus via Sarria.

Happy preparations.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
To get Triacastela you need to get to Sarria and then get a taxi from Sarria to Triacastela. You can get to Sarria from Madrid by direct train from Madrid Charmatin railway station. From Santiago Airport you can get to Sarria via indirect bus (you have to change a Lugo bus stop). Finally you can get a taxi direct from Santiago airport to Triacastela (I would guess about €145/€150). I am organising a 7 & 1/2 day trip in April and we are starting at Sarria. This gives one day to get to the Sarria, 5 days walking, 1 day in Santiago and half a day to get home. If you have only 6 or 7 days I would suggest that starting at Sarria is probably a better option. If you can squeeze an extra two days then I would suggest starting at O Cebreiro rather than Triacastela. You can get to O Cebreiro with a taxi from Santiago airport for €160 or by bus from Madrid Airport to Pedrafita do Cebreiro and then taxi to O Cebreiro. The walk from O Cebreiro to Triacastela is beautiful.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
My son and I bused from Santiago Airport to Sarria last year, then walked from Sarria to Triacastela going the opposite way on the Camino. We did get lost a few times as it is not always easy to make out the right way since you are going the opposite way the arrows are pointing. The following day we walked from Triac. to Sarria going the southern route thru Samos which was great. Good luck!
