I have been asked by a friend of a friend whose 82 year-old father is considering walking the CF, if there are any statistics on those 80+ who have walked the Camino (StJPdP to Santiago). Apparently hey could only find numbers for 60+.

There might not be any statistics, but most Camino veterans have meet a few octagenaians along the Way. It is a very personal decision based on fitness and desire, but is certainly possible. A modified schedule of short days can be considered also.

I think from my walk it is very common to walk with those 80 plus. The oldest I met was 93 she was from Finland. A couple from NZ 82+ very fast walkers as well! A minority yes, but once again we see folks showing life pushes on.

Hi Maggie, back in 2004 on my first chunk of the CF I met an amazing couple from New York doing their first long distance walk together. They were in their 80's !! He turned out to be Yehudi Menuhin's grandson (famous violinist, I hope I have the spelling correct!) I was a mere 65 at the time!. Later on I met some more octogenarians down on the veedlepee. I will be 79 in July and hope to have finally finished the v dlp. Next year for my 80th and still on the planet I hope to do the whole damn CF all over again! :)

Yours in glee!

wow the best on your next Camino. My doctor has assured me I will be doing it in my 80's God willing. It all takes being in good health despite the aches and pains.

There are are actually several posters on this very thread that are in their 80's and still walking every year.
We (on the forum) are just a very small percentage of the pilgrims who walk each year. The actual number of folks in their late 70's and 80's is, no doubt, much higher than most would suppose.

It has become common enough that it really should not be a surprise any longer.
