I'm a week behind you starting on the 8th of April. Planning on walking the alternative route the first day as the mountain pass may not be open and my fitness needs work. Buen Camino.

The "alternate route" is actually the original route reffered to as the Valcarlos route and is a beautiful route. We walked it in April 2012 as we were told not to take the Napoleon. Either way enjoy it.

I have walked the Napoleon route twice in 2015 and 2027 and I really love it!

Ok, back to the OP. Take good wet gear and plenty layers for the cold, merino if possible. There is a great company in the UK called EDZ where I get mine, a bit more expensive than man made material but worth it IMO.

Hola! My husband and i fly into Bilbao on the 3 april from south africa to start walking from SJPDP on the 5th. Perhaps we will see you. I am 52 and unfit, but it is my 3rd Camino and do not be afraid to walk over the top! you can definitely do it. it is such an achievement and after that the rest is easy!

We start on 2nd April, would love to take Napoleon route if weather permits. We have been planning this for so long it feels a little surreal at the moment.

My brother and I are starting on April 8th from SJPDP. Both first timers.

Rather than have uncertainty, I have decided I'm definitely going the Valcarlos route. It's all new anyway. There are 5 of us, so don't want to risk injury. I hurt my ankle walking downhill on the Camino Portugues last year. Starting on the 8th of April too.
