Can't wait to visit in July! Thank you for this interesting article. The Prado is my main reason for spending an extra day in Madrid after finishing my Camino.:)

Download Rick Steve’s audio guide of Eurooe and in the Madrid section he has a great guide of the Prado that takes you almost step by step to all the highlights. I think I spent about 6 hrs there the 1st time and now I also arrive or leave from Madrid so I can go again.
My only scary thing on 3 Caminos happened at the Prado. I left my belongings in my room and only had my small day pack with me for wandering around. Always have my rain parkas and all my medicine with me as missing a med could be a quick end to a Camino. Checked my back at the Prado at the same time as a large group on a tour was checking in. Went back to get my pack to go outside to the cafe for a beer break and to read and they couldn’t find my pack. After standing there in tears as they searched for about an hour the tour director of the big tour came running back in with my pack. Seems they had given them my back and after getting on the bus and driving away they realized they had an extra pack. That took 2 beers to get over. Prado was worth it. Buying the skip the line ticket is also great.

When I visited the Prado with friends we anticipated spending only 2 hours, my limit for museums. As we entered they gave us a brochure that challenged us to find the 50 most important/famous paintings. The day turned into a delightful 6 hour scavenger hunt. Often a painting was supposed to be in one gallery but wasn't. It seemed a guide often responded "it was there a few weeks ago but I think they moved it." At any rate we had a wonderful time. We probably spent 20 minutes studying 'Las Meninas' by Velazquez, in part because someone once labeled it the most perfect painting ever.
