This spring I will be walking the camino with my father. He has gone before and has good advice, but I wondered if there is any specific advice from women about walking the camino. For example, Carrying 10-15% of my body weight seems impractical when it translates to twelve pounds. I wonder if other women have taken skirts instead of pants?

Sure, girls walk in skirts! One of my companions this summer left a pair of pants on a clothesline and bought a skirt in the next town to replace them. She found it to be convenient and very comfortable. I saw others as well who found skirts to be cool and comfortable. It is also nice to have a skirt to change into for the evening after a shower.

I saw one or two women walking in skirts this past year... and thought about it myself as well, but didn't do it. I myself prefer the pilgrim 'standard' of the lightweight pants that zip off into shorts, but a skirt should work fine as long as it isn't cold out. Just make sure it will adapt to you possibly changing in size (most folks lose weight, though I didn't. Guess I didn't have much to lose) and that it dries quickly.

I would say try to keep your pack under 10Kg. That's about how much mine was (a little more with food and water), and I was perfectly fine.

Other advice for women- bring bras/underwear that you don't mind other folks seeing, like if you hang them off the back of your backpack to dry if they are still damp in the morning. And sportsbras are a good thing to bring instead of the regular sort.

I don't know if you are the makeup wearing sort, but I suggest leaving all of that behind. Because I have long hair that will turn into dreads if it doesn't have conditioner, I used a shampoo-conditioner-in-one for hair, body soap, washing clothes, etc. It worked fine :).

I didn't really find there to be many 'women-specific' things I encountered on the camino, and I am a young woman who walked solo. Good luck! It will be a wonderful time, I'm sure.
Buen Camino
