The Archbishop of Santiago, Julián Barrio Barrio, said today that there is no "good chance' that Pope Benedict XVI will visit Santiago during the Holy Year although "it is not excluded" for 2011.
At an informative breakfast at the Tribune Galicia European Forum held in Santiago, Archbishop Julián Barrio Barrio said his recent talks with the Vatican "does not leave many chances" for the Pope's visit to this city during the Holy Year, since he is likely to visit to Spain in 2011 on the occasion of the convening of the World Youth Day at Madrid .
Traveling twice in two years to the same country would involve some difficulties, said the Archbishop of Compostela, who said the Holy See does not consider this appropriate.
However, Julián Barrio Barrio left the door open for the pope’s visit to Santiago in 2011, the year which marks the 800th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral. "It is not ruled out and we will do everything possible," said the Archbishop, who recalled that Benedict XVI "has always expressed a great desire to come to Santiago.
Regarding the extension of the works of the Portico de la Gloria, whose scaffolding may not be withdrawn until 2011, Julián Barrio reminded that this is a "great work" that "needs time to carry it out", while acknowledging that he would have liked to "find and fix the porch and make it visible this year."
"There are moments in life where we have to make sacrifices immediately," said the Archbishop, "what matters is to have the satisfaction of seeing the portico completely restored even if that means "sacrificing" their "wishes" so that this work is done as it should be done.
Also, the Archbishop was willing to open to the public this year, "the largest number of churches" located in the Camino de Santiago, but recalled the "very real shortcomings" of this process does not have a "discreet surveillance" at temples, because it may cause "unpleasant surprises".
In any case, the Bishop explained that both the Archbishop and the Xunta are making "great efforts" to maximum number of churches which are open to pilgrims.
