Walking the Camino Frances in late October/November

Hi

We are planning on walking a section of the Camino Frances from Ponferrada to Santiago de Compestela in late October/early November this year.

As it will be outside of the peak season, we were hoping to get some advice on the following:

1. Would we need to book accommodation in advance (we are concerned that some alberques may be closed for the winter) or is it generally ok just to turn up?

2. the best way of getting from Madrid to Ponferrada to start our walk? We are flying into Madrid and have looked at different bus/train options but would be grateful for any recommendations.

3. Any particular accommodation options that you recommend for this part of the route?

Any other hints and tips would be much appreciated!

Thank you :)

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
Transport luggage-passengers.
From airports to SJPP
Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
It won't be busy, but how do you know in advance the places that are open if you do not call ahead?! In the stops with more than one albergue, one probably will be open, and you probably will be able to drop in. The "probably" means that you may have to walk around a bit. Buen camino.

I am currently having a delicious dry white Rioja in Logrono, and I can tell you that it has not been crowded or difficult to get beds— although I am mostly staying in hotels so I don’t have to subject my friends to my coughing!

I have walked in late October, with no problems getting a bed (2015).
