Where now?

Hi everyone: my girlfriend and I just finished our first Camino SJPP to Santiago. We are going on to Finestere then bus back to Santiago. On or near 24/05/2016. We have a couple of weeks until we fly out of Barcelona and need some ideas of places to go, hangout for a bit etc. we are 60+ mature couple. We like the train system in Spain, are looking at Portugal possibly heading down the coast into Seville etc. any ideas of towns places would be great.

I spend a few days in Porto after my last camino, lovely town, just make sure you don't get tempted by the yellow arrows! Congratulations to your completed pilgrimage, SY

Hi Deb & Rob, I am also a big fan of the Spanish train network, so here are some suggestions. Porto is certainly worth a stay of two nights, but Madrid's Prado was a highlight of my pre-Camino travels. Travelling by train from SdC you could stop off at Segovia - just short of Madrid - to see the wonderful aqueduct and other Roman treasures, as well as the magnificent cathedral. I stayed at the Sercotel Hotel Infanta Isabel which was on the plaza next to the cathedral and was not expensive but felt like luxury to me. You mention that you will be flying out of Barcelona so, if you haven't already visited it, I suggest the guided tour of the Palau de Musica Catalunya, not a Gaudi design, but an architectural gem inside and out. You need to book ahead for the tour and the guides are very good.

My vote is for Sevilla. Head down via Madrid (AVE train from there is easy peasy) and base yourself in the old city of Seville. Spend a day or two getting lost in the gorgeous narrow lanes. There are loads of easy day trips from your base and an easy AVE direct to Barcelona when you’re ready to leave.
Places nearby to visit: Ronda, Cadiz, Jerez, Aracena, Osuna, Carmona, Cordoba (2 days including Granada), day trip to Tangiers on ferry

Angel-hart, congratulations! And now you have many options. You could do worse than Segovia or Avila, both easily reached from where you are. Lots of history there. If I were in your shoes though, I'd work my way southeast from Burgos, lingering around Santo Domingo de Silos, Covarrubias, and the nearby valleys. I walked through there in March and would love to stay in the area and explore more deeply.
