Starting & Ending in Lisbon?

Hi everyone,

I am a first time poster and a new lurker on this forum, so please excuse any mistakes on my part!

I am thinking of starting my journey in Lisbon around August of this year. I am still unsure about whether I will take the interior or coastal route to start. So far I have read some very useful information about both routes on some previous threads.

My question is: How practical of an idea is it to start in Lisbon, walk up to Santiago, then travel (walk/train/bus) back to Lisbon? I will have 3-3.5 weeks to dedicate to this journey.

have precisely done just that last year in May.
3- 3.5 is a tight schedule (in my book) - if you are a turbo walker and no-rest-day person, you might wing it. Much has been written about this route, timing, weather etc on this fine forum.
Weather in August used to be hot'ish and humid. heaven knows how it will be this year ?!
I took the train back - and had several stops on the way (Porto, Santarem, Ponte de Muge) before I was back in Lisboa. Took it really slow ... 6 wks.
You might want to perhaps consider starting from Santarem, or Coimbra ... that would fit the 3 - 3.5 wks schedule with more ease.

Thank you for the info! Now that I'm reading more about the path from Lisbon, I agree with you, my timing is very tight! Perhaps I should spend some time in Lisbon, take a train to Porto, and begin my walk from there.

If you begin in Porto lose an important part of the Portuguese Caminho.
Why you do not begin in the mythic city of Tomar or in the Coimbra?
Both cities are served by regular trains from Lisbon.

I am about to start from Lisbon very soon (this coming Saturday ) and I am planning for 24- 25 walking days to Santiago de Compostela. That means approximately 27km each walking day. Eventually going have a rest day in Porto. Everything is doable depending on planning and condition.

If you start in porto, and you have 3+ weeks, why not consider walking on from santiago to finistere and or muxia. Really awesome.
