I hope to do another Camino in 2016 ,i am totally addicted to walking in this beautiful country .Every camino i have done have been memorable in their own way even with blisters and sun stroke i have always enjoyed the experience so for anyone thinking of starting if its in your heart to do it thats all it takes ,just do it .

Hi Kerry
I read in one of the threads in this forum that the Camino is addictive, apparently is true... :) Is easy to understand why, nothing better than walk and not having to worry about the daily life and routine at home, lots of time to be oneself. I find walking relaxing. Is something I do at home for enjoyment and therapy after a hard or stressful week at the office, nothing better than walk the trails. Some people drink I walk... Uhmmm Drinking some wine after walking is not so bad either...

I will be doing my first Camino (Frances) in September 2016 and I have been looking at the Portuguese way as well which appears very inviting.

Buen Camino

Hi Christian, after both doing a Camino Frances alone we will walk from Porto to Santiago next year September together.
Wish you well and a Buen Camino, Peter.

Greetings to all on this thread and great to find the forum. I have been wanting to hike the Camino since I first heard about it in the 1980s in Spanish class during my two decades in San Diego, CA. I retired two years ago and have been training since. Hope to hike the traditional Camino Frances including Finisterre and Muxia in the April-May 2016 timeframe. Look forward to forum conversations here during preparations. I have read several guides and supporting books (packing, spiritual facets, etc.), but it is great to hear about experiences from those who have actually hiked the Camino in reality. Earlier this year I also completed a virtual hike of the CF on the walking4fun.com website along with a virtual hike of the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada (4300+ kms). I am currently underway to complete a virtual hike of the Chemin Le Puy from Le Puy en Velay to SJPP in Dec 2015. Looking forward to associations with pilgrims during the walk and to taking in the sights. Ultreya!

You are welcome SimLin, that site is a great motivator and setting up the login is user friendly. It helps if you have a fitbit so you can easily link the two sites for effortless data tracking. Buen Camino.

Hi. Eddie and Judi from Australia and Indonesia, where we spend a lot of time. We have just locked in our Camino Portugues (coastal route) from Porto in early May 2016. We are older walkers (both 70+ is all I'll admit to) and both fit and healthy. Eddie is a very experienced walker; me not so much, but training. Looking forward to learning from the wisdom of this forum.

Hi Cumbres

I checked the virtual hiking site, that's very cool. I may give it a try. I walk lots of the local trail in my area, we are fortunate to have them right out of our backyard. I see that you have done you homework and learn Spanish, I'm sure this will be very useful in the Camino.

Yes, it is very easy and I do have a Fitbit...can't live without it haha - I chose the LePuy because I am doing the Frances next May and will use it then simultaneously haha Thanks again!

Then we have at least two things in common. My principal home is located in a countryside of greenbelts on rolling hills with a network of roads and lanes all around -- I start my daily walks by stepping off my front porch onto my driveway and have choices on how far I go by choosing a particular routing in the network. As for Spanish, I am a university certified translator from San Diego State U. 1998. Regarding the W4F site, the daily marathon and half-marathon badges as well as the weekly distance badges, stage badges and trail completion badges may also be of interest. You can check out my profile with my W4F ID #3371 and use my trail name. !Buena suerte y Buen Camino!

Hi Sim. Yes, I think I will. This time of the year the trails around home still really good for walking but they will be full of snow before long so I don't do much hiking in he winter, however, I ski a lot.

SimLin, glad you are getting started on W4F. Hope it helps you with training -- I found that it helped me increase daily distances. On starting up the CF virtually on the same day you begin it in reality, you have the flexibility to change from one trail to another at any time so that should not be a problem for you. Good luck and Buen Camino!

Thank you...however, sadly, I might of signed up early in the excitement I forgot I am on "walking" rest because of Plantar Fasciitis inflammation in my left foot - I cannot begin to express how frustrating this is and yet I do not want any further injury so it will a slow pace for my virtual trail :(

Good evening SimLin, sorry to hear about your Plantar Fasciitis -- hope all goes well with your recovery. That reminds me of the serious case of shin splints I had in May 2014 where I had to be off my feet for three weeks. It was not pleasant but all turned out well and I learned how to walk again, this time without over pronating. Heal well and Buen Camino.

Hi Christina ,your first Camino is so special and the most challenging ,for that reason i would try the Camino Francis first .Its really beautiful ,the Porto way is also beautiful but i found it a bit harder because of the mountains and a lot less pilgrims travel this one so not so much socialising at night .The best part of a camino for me is the amazing people you meet along the way and sharing a meal and a glass of wine at the end of a days walking is just wonderful .

Thank you Christian...my journey is not scheduled till April/May 2016 - I'll be ready. Just noticed you are from Kitchener...always nice to see fellow Canadians on the forum! Buenos Dias

Good to know that your plans will not change... Where in Ontario are you from?

Yes, my plans are to start the Frances in September. I agree, the evening meals and conversation is appealing. Meeting other pilgrims from different part of the world should be fun.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Ordered long underwear last night, bought my plane ticket today, and getting my pack fitted tomorrow, so I guess I'm indeed going to be hiking the Camino this spring! Leaving from Montreal April 15th, then taking train from Paris to Bayonne. I'll be starting in St Jean Pied de Port, and hoping to walk via Orisson if the weather cooperates. Interesting time of year to pack for, given the change in seasons we'll see....

That's great sabbott, ticket in hand makes it official. All the best to you, Buen Camino

Time to check in on Class of 2016. I intended walking from Burgos to Leon or maybe Astorga if the walking went well. This Camino actually started in 2012 in St. Jean Pied du Port.!!!

Then I heard that Pope Francis had decided that the year of Mercy 2016 should be a Holy year in Rome and Santiago and that the Holy door would be open. (Officially the next Holy year in Santiago is 2021) and seeing as I no longer buy green bananas I thought that this would be a great opportunity to experience a holy year in Santiago so I have decided to forego my flight home from Madrid and keep walking to Santiago.

I leave home at about 4.15 am on the morning of 20th April, flight to Madrid, bus to Burgos and walk to Rabe de las Calzadas.

Looking forward to meeting some of you on the Camino.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Buen Camino @sabbott. Yes, you'll be walking in two different seasons but hopefully that will be part of the fun. Enjoy the planning!

Great motivator and it is SO good to get a real measure of step length.

It appears that you may already be a user on W4F, and if so, which trail are you on and what is your ID #? Mine is 3371 and I am on Chemin Le Puy.

I see that we are going Spanglish... Let me tell you a quick story about Spanish and English. My son said that soy milk is regular milk introducing itself in Spanish... Soy Milk.

(Chuckles) Christian, now that you mention it, why don't we avoid Spanglish? My experiences with it have taken conversations in some really negative directions. I don't think any of my comments or words in the two messages to Lachance were Spanglish. I try to avoid it like the plague and keep my terms and words in conformity with the dictionary of the Spanish Royal Academy or in accordance with widely recognized use in international Castilian. For example, when I lived in Southern California, I encountered some pretty incoherent language in the streets around the Los Angeles area with words like "lonchear" for having lunch (replacing almorzar) or "troque" for truck (replacing camion), and many others. My preference is not to go there.

As for "Soy Milk," it is perfectly idiomatic and widely understood in English (la leche de soya). My view is that in Spanish it is a meaningless expression, not recognized in commonly used Spanish. It doesn't seem to make any sense to try to create a contemporary Spanish term with the English spelling of "milk" -- that just doesn't seem to fit.

On the broader topic of language relative to the pilgrimage, two other comments come to mind. First, in the 1980s when I heard of the existence of the Camino and the pilgrimage, it was in connection with the history of the Spanish language (Castilian) that developed with some French and German words brought by pilgrims across the Pyrenees during the period of the formation of the language from the time of the Romans to around 1492. Second, I am wondering how the locals with whom we will interact will respond along the trail from SJPP to Finisterre when we speak in Castilian or English where their local language is Basque, Galician or possibly Catalan -- let's see what happens.

Buen Camino.

SimLin, great news that you are on the Chemin Le Puy! Searching on the site happens under the Friends tab with the concept of groups. Try the following:
1) Click Friends tab;
2) Adjust settings as View = Trail Map, Group = Fitbit Friends, Map Type = Road Map, and Trail = Chemin Le Puy;
3) Scroll to the bottom of the page;
4) In the Group Details box, click on "Add a Friend,"
5) Enter ID# of your friend;
6) Click Save;
7) The site now returns to the top of the page of the Friends tab. Scroll down looking at the map and the list of members on the trail. You should see yourself and the friend you added;
8) If you don't see your friend, repeat steps 4 through 6 and scroll down the map and list to find your friend. Repeat if necessary until you see your friend; and
9) Click on the name of the friend and you can see your friend's profile data. The site will move you automatically to the Profile tab.

The above is how you find someone on the site, where they are on the trail and their profile data.

I have also found it helpful to use the "Neighbors" grouping to find others on the same trail I am on. In this way you can find just about anyone if they are on the same trail with you. On the longer trails, you may find duplicative trail names so the W4F ID# is the only way you can pinpoint the member who is your friend. To set this up, you would do the following to see all members on the trail on a particular day:

A) Click Friends tab;
B) Adjust settings as View = Trail Map, Group = Neighbors, Map Type = Road Map, and Trail = Chemin Le Puy;
C) Scroll to the bottom of the page;
D) Click on "Add Neighbors" icon in the Group Details box;
E) Set the "# of Neighbors" to "100;"
E) Set the "Proximity of Neighbors" to "Entire Trail;"
F) Set the "Direction of Neighbors" to "Both ahead and behind you;"
G) Set "Action" to "Add new neighbors;"
H) Click on "Add Neighbors;"
I) At the top of the page, look at the # in the Trail drop down and it should show about 172. If it does not show that #, then repeat steps D through H and check the # again. If the # is unchanged, then the list is complete so you can use it to find whomever you seek by looking for them in the list. If the number changed, repeat steps D through H again until the number is the same. As I mentioned earlier, in case of duplicative trail names, use the W4F # to conclusively find your friend.

I hope you find this helpful.

Buen Camino.

Ok, no more references to Spanglish.

I do see or hear a lot of what you are talking about mostly when I go to NY and Florida where there are lots of Spanish speaking people. Unfortunately due to the incredibly large Spanish influence in the USA those types of idioms will continue to be used. Whether we like it or not many of those words will make it into dictionaries if they have not already. Let’s not forget that the evolution of the languages had happen throughout history exactly like that when mixing one or more languages together. This area (Where I live) does not have that many Spanish people so is not commonly heard.

Buen Camino everyone!
That's great Sim. Now tic tac tic tac... The truth is that time goes so fast, specially with Christmas approaching when we are all so busy visiting and being visited...

I have been looking at getting my ticket as well but I think is a bit too early as I'm going in September, I'm watching the prices as they vary so much.

Mucha suerte y buen Camino for you.

Prices do vary a great deal. I wasn't going to book till January but when I actually found direct flights at a reasonable price...I jumped on it. And as you say, with Christmas coming...haha I have secured my flights and I can spend without worrying :)

I posted in here back in July 2014. It was the first time I'd publicly committed to walking the Camino.

The original plan was to walk in Spring of 2016. Now, the plan is to walk in the Fall, starting on or about Sept. 10, 2016 in SJPP and wrapping up on/about October 16th.

Now starting to track flights and figure out the best way to get to SJPP...

Greetings... I am planning to walk The Camino Frances beginning in SJPP on the first 'open' day, April 1st. Being an ocean woman I will finish at Finisterre. I will be walking by/with myself. I have been enjoying reading posts and gathering information. Blessings to all...

Thanks for your understanding. Yes, languages do move in that direction, particularly under the force of another more dominant language. Generally speaking, my impression is that Spanish tends to change substantially slower than English with the regulation by the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE). On the other hand, the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary tend to be quicker to track what is actually in use. RAE strives for unity among all the different Spanish speaking countries and controls what is included in its dictionary.

As for what we may find in our attempts to talk with folks along the Camino, I noted some earlier comments on this or another forum indicating that English is used surprisingly often and attempted use of Spanish is welcomed. So the regional dialects may not be much of an issue after all.

Buen Camino.

I have been in many South American countries and noticed much of the different influences in the language according to the immigration they had over time after the Spanish who happened to come from Castilla. For instance in Argentina they had a large number of Italians that immigrated there, this shows in the everyday usage of the language. Chile on the other hand had very little immigration, mostly due to their natural borders such as the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. Hence the language did not evolve as much. Places like Venezuela and Colombia are quite interesting this way. I also lived in Spain, a small country with several fully developed languages. Anyhow, I would have prefer that we all had a common language. Esperanto come to mind.

That's great to hear Linda. Are you a member of the Canadian Pilgrims or are you going to get your passport in St Jean? They have meetings occasionally and I missed the one Toronto one in November. I look forward to following your FB site. I'm a travel blogger and will definitely be doing that when I walk. Just hung up with travel agent and will be booking my flight in April. Getting excited!

I thought it was a little early but the agent said the price would continue to go up. I just looked at Toronto-Paris and Madrid-Toronto for $860. Not bad!

Hi everyone,

I joined this forum a while ago, when I was hoping to walk the Frances this summer. Then a lot of things happened and it didn't happen. Now I'm really hoping that financially I can do it during the summer of 2016. I'm tied to July and August as I am a teacher and that's all I get to travel like that. :) I haven't made any purchases yet, or started really preparing, but I've been watching youtube videos, reading books and every so often lurking around here. I hope to be more active now that I've almost committed myself to going this summer.

Hey Tina...it usually starts by confessing on the forum...first thing you'll know, you will have booked tickets! Buen Camino!

I thought I was going to be in the class of 2015 but ended up cycle touring Hungary instead. Goodness only knows why. Either way, I will be in Europe for two months from 27 December 2015. For the first month I will be traveling Holland and Poland with my partner. But then he will go home so I was at a loss as to what to do for my second month on the other side of the world. But now I am booking a flight from Amsterdam to Bilbao and a train from Bilbao to Burgos to walk the Camino Frances for 20 days. I have enough time to walk from SJP but I have come to learn in my travels that family is important and I have an aunt in Lisbon who wants to show me around her city and my grandmother in Holland who I want to see before I leave for home. So 20 days it will be from Burgos to Santiago starting on 25 January 2016.

I am hoping my dual pilgrim compastella that I picked up in Japan will be accepted on the way because I would like to have it stamped, rather than having the two caminos stamped on separate passports. But that's a minor matter. Here's to a winter camino 2016

Not sure I understand your question right. With "dual pilgrim compastella" you mean a pilgrims passport (which is different from a Compostela btw, see http://peregrinossantiago.es/eng/pilgrimage/the-compostela/) that you used on a pilgrimage in Japan? It is possible to have it stamped additionally to a Credencial for a pilgrimage to Santiago, see http://peregrinossantiago.es/eng/pilgrimage/the-credencial/ , but you will need a Spanish Credencial (more correctly a Camino de Santiago Credencial) also, especially if you want to stay in albergues. Buen Camino, SY

PS For an updated list on albergues that are open in winter, see http://www.aprinca.com/alberguesinvierno/

Flight to Madrid booked. Hotel in Burgos booked. I am now committed. I arrive in Burgos by bus on 24 January to start my Camino on 25 January. It's been a long time coming with many false starts. But that's just my journey. I have until 13 February (20 days) to reach Santiago. Whether or not it's enough time is immaterial ... There's always a bus. My Camino is about letting go of ego so I am open to whatever happens. And excited about the journey (even the cold, wet and prospect of snow)

Lachance, I just saw it. La perrita se llama Deb! I must be going blind. CT
@CumbresTrekker: ¡Hola! Acabo de ver sus respuestas. Gracias. No, me llamo Deb. La perrita, ella fue llamada 'Bella', porque era bella. Murió este año. Me encanta ver esa cara bonita y recuerdo.

I am doing le Puy on W4F. Lo siento, my id number is on another pc. I can look it up and tell you later. Had hoped to do the last bit of that one before St Jean, but now can't. Still hoping to do a section of the CF and didn't want to put that on W4F as I want it to see it as it happens.

Anyway, I was so excited to see your posts that I haven't read anything after them yet!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
