Hi am trying to keep my carry-on luggage low so thinking about posting Sleeping bag to St Jean from Australia. Anyone had experience in having the post office holding parcels for a few days?

Thats good to know. I had always heard that if we mailed items they would get caught up in customs and we would never see them.

I see you are walking in April but I would seriously reconsider the need for a sleeping bag. A silk liner between May and October is sufficient, many albergues have blankets if you need one. Normally the dormitories are stuffy and warm because people close the windows at night. The customs issue could be a game changer too.

Keep checking because I have seen that you do NOT post items to the EU (a least to Spain, maybe to France is okay) from outside the EU because they WILL get caught in customs. You may be able to get them again but only after trouble, time and expense.

I looked into it a bit more. Shipping firms are too expensive. Shipping by mail is probably too unreliable to get the bag there when you need it. Here are some things you can check:

My sleeping was too warm (picked it for later hiking in the mountains.) I bought a lighter weight one for 95 euros but after a few weeks (on a two month camino) I didn't even use that. You may prefer to leave the bag at home and either take a sleeping bag liner or pick one up in Europe.

Thank you, Rick for following up with this message. Will check out those links and see what I can come up with. I have a liner and will bring that - it's just that the weather over there seems to be extreme at the moment and I am a bit of a cold frog!

It's most possible that your checked luggage would cost less than shipping a sleeping bag to Europe. Add the customs to that...
If you'll be cold you can use albergue blankets and/or buy a cheapo lightweight sleeping bag (10-20€) in Spain and after completion of your Camino leave it in donation box in one of the albergues if you don't want to bring it home or your luggage will be too heavy (gifts and all ).

Sounds like buying one in Spain or checking it in might be the best options
