Air mattress

My friend and I are preparing to walk the Camino Frances starting May 19 of this year. We have gathered a lot of wonderful information from this forum. Thank you all! I was wondering if anyone could comment on whether an air mattress would be beneficial to bring. We are planning to stay in refugios. The air mattress I am looking at is extremely compact, self inflating and weighs just under a pound. Thanks for any feedback!

Welcome to the forum. You've picked a lovely time of year to walk. I would give a resounding NO to the question whether an air mattress would be a good thing to bring along. Sleeping pads are probably the one item most frequently dumped by pilgrims and left behind for others to take. If you were walking in August, when the mass mobs descend, that might be a different story, but not in May/June.

P.s. You will find that the term "refugio" is really no longer used along the Camino, having been replaced almost everywhere by "albergue." When it is used, refugio generally refers to accommodation a notch or two below an albergue, that is, more basic and not much in the way of creature comforts.

Hello! If you are wondering if air mattress can be brought there, possibly yes I can say. There are air mattresses nowadays that can be handy and easy built. But, that is just an option if you want to make yourself comfortable than using sleeping bags. Cheers!

To be quite clear, I have not yet walked any Camino. I have simply backpacked for about 30 years.

If you are planning to overnight in albergues, hotels, etc., then my answer is a resounding "no".
