Apartment in santiago

Hola and greetings from a wet and miserable bank holiday Monday in London,

I am planning on moving to Santiago next year and want to do some reseach on rental accomodation in the city. I am looking for a one or two bedroom flat.

I haven't came across much on the net and wondered whether anyone has any advice they could give me. At the moment it looks like we should book a hotel and then go around town looking for availabile places but obviously I would like to have an idea of what is available for what prices in advance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi there,

In short (my advice):

Best to spend a few days (living in hostel/hotel) in Santiago and look for an apartment.

Where to look:
- Look in local papers (La Voz de Galicia or El Correo Gallego)
- Just walk around in the area where you would like to live and look for "Se Alquila" signs and call the phone number on the sign.
- Real estate agencies in Santiago also rents out apartments on behalf of the owners. They often have a catalog of places for rent. This is comfortable, but you may pay a bit more for for the extra service given by the agency.

PLEASE NOTE: I have heard that some foreigners (an American couple ) have had problems getting parts of their deposit back when they left their apartment. I guess the renter gambles on the fact that you have bought a ticket to leave for home and do not have time to stay and fight this.... :-( It happened once, and probably will not happen to you... but thought I would mention it.

Renting via an agency might help in this regards since they may be able to help you...

Good luck, when are you coming? Are you coming to study or work? ... I am curious... :)

Saludos,
Ivar

Thank you Ivar,

I have been to Santiago before and noticed there does seem to be a lot of 'se aquila' signs around. I just wandered if there were any estate agents specialising in rentals. I will look into the links and I am coming to Santiago again in a few weeks so maybe I can visit some places to get an idea of what you get for your money.

I am not sure when we are moving from London but hopefully within the next 12 months, my partner is doing a TEFL course and hopes to teach whilst I have no idea what I'm going to do but have been self employed in the music industry for many years. I don't really care what I do but I will find something to do once we have moved and settled in.

Thanks again for your help and I will keep you posted on how we get on in the future.

Hasta luego
