The only climate control system you're likely to come across is an open window - if you're lucky as it seems that, as soon as someone opens a window, someone else will come and close it.

The albergues tend to be quite warm simply because of the number of people in them though that information is tempered by the fact that I've only walked in the period from May to end of September. I don't know how cold they're likely to be outside this period.

The Spanish and French will normally close a window regardless of how warm and stuffy the dorm is, and the Germans will always open a window regardless of how cold it is. It is amusing to watch:). I stayed in one Albergue where my bed was next to an opening window, it was a hot day so I opened the window, big mistake a dairy was just outside and the cow dung/urine smell was strong,

Power is very expensive in Spain, and is the most expensive item in running an albergue. There is no heat unless it is absolutely necessary in the opinion of the hospitalero, who is paying the bill. Pilgrims may disagree with the host, and can always ask for heat.

In late autumn and winter most albergues which are open do have SOME heat.
When all works well what BLISS it is to open the door and step into surrounding warmth when tired, wet and chilled! However, there have been other frigid camino nights when my 'evening dress' for bed was knited hat, socks and thermals. BE PREPARED!
