Best way to get from Madrid to SJPP

emster3

New Member
I will be flying into Madrid August 29 and hope to get to SJPP that evening to start walking the next morning.

Any suggestions?!

This is my first time and I am doing this alone. Sort of stressing out.

Thank you!

Re: best way to get to Madrid to SJPP

Hola

I'd go for air travel particularly as you will be at the airport in Madrid. You gave a number of choices of carrier but I notice that right now Ryanair has a choice of three flight times on 29 August for the grand amount of 17€. Flight time 1 hour and 10 mins.

Also a general point, Damian Corrigan's website:

http://gospain.about.com/od/inaroundmad ... ntiago.htm

Is very useful for advice on internal travel in Spain.

Have a good flight and a very good Camino :)

Re: best way to get to Madrid to SJPP

I don't see that RyanAir goes from Madrid to Pamplona or Biarritz. There is a train from downtown Madrid to Pamplona at about 58 to 70 Euro:
Train / Route Departure Arrival Duration Prices Facilities Accessibility
99534 ENLACE 07.30 11.17 3 h. 47 min.
00605 ALVIA 11.35 14.40 3 h. 05 min.
00609 ALVIA 15.05 18.26 3 h. 21 min.
99530 ENLACE 15.30 19.20 3 h. 50 min.
00801 ALVIA 19.35 22.40 3 h. 05 min.

Re: best way to get to Madrid to SJPP

Hi Emster3. I am arriving in Madrid around 7:30am and will make my way to sjp on that day. Maybe we can hook up. I have not finalized the travel yet. Will do that next few weeks. Lots of time.

Ooops. Sorry. You are quite correct - I have Santiago on the brain and obviously entered this as the destination. However I have flown from Madrid to Pamplona with Iberia and although the flights listed today are expensive I got a last minute flight for 50€. Might be worth checking nearer the time.

Re: best way to get to Madrid to SJPP

Hi Emster3,

Your options for Madrid-SJPDP will depend on your flight arrival time into Madrid that will effect your possible connections. FYI: we're getting in on Sep 4 at 7:10, catching the train at 11:35 from Atocha (Touriste class @ c.$26 ea), getting to Pamplona at 2:40, which is too late to catch the 2:00 bus to SJPDP, so we've made arrangements to taxi from Pamplona. The Pamplona-SJPDP taxi is c.90E, but split 3 ways it comes out reasonable for us, and not a bad cost for the entire route. It would be more, I think, than the bus to Roncevalles then taxi (late) to SJPDP, plus the taxi gets us into SJPDP in time for dinner at L'Espirit du Chemin.

Good luck.

Re: best way to get to Madrid to SJPP

Friends, my challenge also on 8 September. Sorted it out this afternoon after having 6 rejections with various credit cards on the Renfe site. Seems like stacks have also had challenges with non Spanish credit cards.

Here's my run:
Renfe train Madrid to Pamplona depart 7.35am arrive 10.38am 35.30 euros
Bus Conda Pamplona to SJPdP depart 2.00pm arrive about 3.35pm 15 euros.
Time and euros not bad for covering half of Spain.
Cheers Jonathan

Susanne - So here are my flight plans.

Hello Emster3. I arrive around 7:30. But since the train does not leave until the afternoon, I can wait for you and we can travel together. There is a train at 2PM but will also look at bus option.

Just send me your flight details so I can find you.

Less than 4 weeks to go. I look forward meeting pelegrinos(as) from class of 2012. :p

Hello
I've got a dumb question, since I've never been out of the US.
I get in to madrid Sept 10th at 8:30a and have to catch
A train at Puerta De Atocha at 11:35. I hear it's about an
hour away from airport. I'm wondering if going thru customs
Will take up more than an hour ?
Please help

Hi, Bando,

There are actually several ways to get to Atocha station from the airport.

One is the metro, which requires two changes and takes around an hour.

The other is the RENFE cercanias (commuter line), LIne C-1,which takes less than a half hour. In comparing metro to RENFE, you should factor in two things -- the RENFE trains run less frequently than the metro, so there may be more of a wait; and the RENFE trains only leave from T4, and not the older terminal (T1,2,3). The airlines that fly into T4 are Iberia and all its partners, which includes American and British Airways. But I think most other US airlines (e.g., Delta, United, US) land in the older terminal. To get from one terminal to the other requires getting on the free shuttle bus that runs very frequently.

The third option is an airport express bus, which is described in this post: traveling-to-from-the-camino/topic9474.html

The bus is probably much easier than the metro, because it requires no changes, because it stops in both terminals, and also because there is not the same problem with pickpockets as on the metro. I think all of these options cost somewhere around 2 euros.

A taxi would probably be around 30 euros (?) to Atocha. Good luck with the travel, Laurie

I will arrive in Madrid Oct. 16 at 0905, and hope to make it to SJPP that day. I am starting to be nervous that I don't have a more concrete plan... and I am finding it difficult to sort through the plethora of information on this site.
It's looking like the bus to Pamplona, and then a taxi to SJPP is the easiest (least likely for me to make a mistake). I will be traveling alone, and my Spanish is very bad.
Can you tell me where to find routes and schedules for fall? Are the ones posted here still current? I have heard that things change after Oct. 1st. I am hoping that if I can get to SJPP, I can figure things out from there.

I am trying to get to SJPP around 24 October.

My current and still fluid plan is to fly Madrid.

From there take the METRO to the Atocha train station. The website suggest one hour with several transfers.
http://www.metromadrid.es/en/index.html

The train to Pamplona is operatated by Renfe.
http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/index.html

Two paths to SJPP:
Bus station in Pamplona
http://www.estaciondeautobusesdepamplon ... -SAL-.aspx

Bus from Pamplona to Roncesvalles once a day leaves at 1800.
http://www.autocaresartieda.com/?scc=svpropios

From Roncesvalle I am considering to walk the low road to SJPP and return via Napoleon route (apparently this route from SJPP is highly recommended); in effect adding about 25km. Its also possible to take a taxi.

Earlier in this thread someone pointed out there is a bus from Pamplona to SJPP. Turns out there is once a day at 1400. It is international - Spain to France. The actual bus line is Conda S.A.
http://www.alsa.es/en/buy-and-schedules ... ernational

My view is arriving on overnight flight from Vancouver and travelling to SJPP (in France so how is your french?) is a very long day. All you need is to arrive in Madrid late (planes NEVER arrive on time) and the rest of your travel plans get rather tight. I plan to stop for a day in Madrid for jet lag recovery. Pamplona is a realistic objective for day of arrival though and is a good staging area that Roncesvalle is not and SJPP doesn't appear to be either.

You can reserve a hotel online for your last night of luxury and avoid the language issue for a day.
Renfe has links to hotels as do many other travel websites.
