Calatrava Architecture on the Camino

Note from moderator: This comment by trecile set off a spate of posts about the Spanish architect Calatrava. I have made it a new thread, and think it would be fun to make a list of all Calatrava buildings we have seen on the Camino.

They were mentioning something about landing in Mannheim (Germany) army airport so I thought they were both US Army personel. Well, maybe not. Never mind

But I was in Redding last spring. Just visiting though

Yes, I remembered the name of it - the Sundial Bridge, because the bridge itself is part of a sundial. It was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

It's amazing that such a small city as Redding has a pedestrian bridge designed by a world class architect.

Hahahaha, I didn't recall the name (I admit I didn't even try but I knew it) because @trecile had it right. But I did remember the architect. Well, after all it is the "almighty" Calatrava

But..., wait, re my memory..., you think I'm some kind of an elephant or a whale??? I remember (ooops, again my memory) that they have good memory.

Yep, could be an elephant.
And it could be a whale also because I was a competitive swimmer and born in March (zodiac!)
But I was conceived in Lybia in 1969 just before Ghadafi coup and my mother was overthrown from the camel with me in her

Something must've happened along the way I guess, hahaha.

What an interesting and unusual story, Kinky! I think you suffered nothing in your mama's fall off that camel!
One of my sons was born in a bus by a midwife in 1979, but that's another story.
I was on a water ballet team in high school and have always enjoyed swimming.

I'm sure that, other than admirers of Calatrava's bridges, it's not exactly on many people's bucket lists!

I think Calatrava is probably the world’s most famous architect with the longest list of lawsuits pending for this kind of problem. I remember when I was in Valencia and an expat friend took me out to the row of Calatrava buildings in the former river bed, she had details to share about a number of lawsuits involving these buildings. Seems that Calatrava designs with no concern about the engineering and then the poor engineers are left to figure out how to make his dreams a reality. Seems they frequently have problems with that approach.

For starters, the train station in Lisbon (Caminho Portugues)

Oriente Station, Lisbon

Oriente Station was built in 1998 as the transportation hub for the World Expo held that same year in Lisbon. The station is one of the most spectacular modern buildings in the city.

The article I linked to above says that the court only required him to pay 78,000 euros for the predictable damage that has been caused by millions of tourists rolling their suitcases over the bridge, which leaves from right next to the train station. 78,000 euros seems like less than a slap on the wrist. Many of the other lawsuits pending are for much greater sums.

I had to look it up because I had no memory of it. I know the Vdlp crosses the river near the cathedral and goes through Triana, but I do have a vague memory of being on the Triana side of a very modern walkway near the river. So does the camino go near that bridge?

A few years ago I was visiting my sister and her family in Redding and the Calatrava Bridge was the first place she took me when we toured the 'sights' in Redding.
