Hello, I and my friend have plans to walk to Camino Portugues in september.....but i have one "problem" , i have to take with me my dog< i have nobody who can take a carry of my dog in my home....Or I will go next year if this idea is realy bad. My dog has a small size, very small weght 1800gr, it`s can go for long way and if tired i can carry on me. I think the problem may come only in a places where we will take a rest, sleep -albergues. other people are tired...but i can sleep ouside. I realy need yours advise. Did you see someone in Camino with a dog? Thanks

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
You can search the forum for all the posts - there are many - about walking with a dog. Type the word "dog" on the right hand side box (Google Custom Search) and click on search.

A few weeks ago I saw this little dog in the pilgrim office in Santiago waiting for her owner who was upstairs waiting for the Compostela. (People leave their sticks downstairs when they have finished walking).

When I walked there was a lovely French girl with her dog 'Loup'. She found it a bit of a challenge as most of the refuges would not take a dog inside. They would usually let him sleep sometimes in the porch, yard, or other outside space, and Loup was used to sleeping outside, so this wasn't a problem. He didn't bark or howl. She brought a small bed blanket for him to keep him off the cold ground. But your dog might not cope with the cold of sleeping out, or he might howl or run off. Best to get him used to it before setting out on the Camino, otherwise you might have a problem.

Hello,

I've seen it several times. You have to carry always some water and food for your dog, so it is an extra weight. Be carefull were you are near of other dogs, in populations and while walking by the road.

About sleeping, I suppose you have to talk to the hospitaleros. It depends on their opinion.

Buen Camino,
