Camping along the Norte: Irun to primitive to Compostela

Questions about camping along the El Camino de Santiago Norte:

1. Is it easy to find areas, near, out of the way of the main trail, to set up a tent?
2. Can one camp near towns/villages/Church yards/outside Albergues?
3. Should one ask permission before setting up a tent?
4. How acceptable are tents along the Camino, i.e do locals accept them?
5. Is it illegal to set up a tent along the Camino Norte?

I think there are a lot of rules about where you can and can't pitch a tent, but on almost every camino I've walked I've met people camping "on the sly", but given your avatar and name, you probably wouldn't go for that. Buen camino, Laurie
