A press conference today has outlined the ongoing programme of restoration and repair work for the cathedral in Santiago. A lot of the focus next year will be on internal work which will severely disrupt the normal pattern of services with many masses being transferred to a nearby church. On the positive side it is expected that the main facade will be cleared of scaffolding by March to allow other work to proceed.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
i was also told the botafumero will not be in use in 2018. this is due to the interior work on the Cathedral.

I’m not able to read Spanish but am planning my first Camino in May- June 2018. Am I correct in assuming that the cathedral in Santiago will be closed on my arrival? No pilgrims mass in the cathedral, no boterfumeiro? This will seriously dampen my spirits! Whilst I understand the need for restoration all through my planning I’ve had a picture in my head of standing in the cathedral during the pilgrims mass watching the boterfumeiro swing. I honestly can’t imagine that not being the end of my first ( and possibly only ) Camino! tears in my eyes now! I have such a heavy heart Reading this
