Late May will be getting busy on the Camino and especialy from Sarria, you can always book ahead with private albergues or stay in Hostals which are small two star hotels.

I think 15 would be more difficult without a booking, but if you start checking price and availability now, you might find suitable places that have sufficient space. Much might depend on whether you are prepared to split the group over a couple of properties if they are not too far apart. The Gronze site is well regarded for having complete accommodation listings, and another that has had good reports recently is Only Pilgrims.

I am sorry that I cannot remember the name, but there is a very nice albergue about 4 or 5 km on the other side of Sarria that seemed to be very nice. I recall that it had a swimming pool and a nice tavern to purchase some libations. Maybe someone can help with the name.

Hi, Brian,

I think the answer to this question depends on whether you are doing this pilgrimage as a group. If you plan to walk together and stay in the same places, reservations are likely to be a big help. I think you may have a fair amout of headaches without them. I think you should expect that many owners will want some kind of financial guarantee in exchange for blocking off so many rooms.

But if your idea is that you are all walking on your own and will find your own accommodations as you arrive, wherever you arrive, I think it's doable without reservations. You may not get your first choices upon arrival, but I think there will be room at the inn, at some inn at least.

Just remember that a group, any group can only walk as fast as its slowest person... Consider this when planning each day's destinations and reservations. Also consider walking less distance each day and obtaining accommodations at places in-between the "standard" daily destinations.

On a related issue, I usually walk my Camino Frances' from late May through the end of June. By the time I reach Sarria, I find frequently that I am competing for the single bed I need in a hostal with groups of organized students and "tourigrinos" who occupy blocks of rooms. While I respect and understand the need for some people to travel in groups and to have their accommodations provided to them as part of a package, know that it does affect solitary pilgrims who cannot stay in albergues (for whatever reason).

Yes, I do use the Internet and phone to book three or four days in advance. But, once I arrive at Sarria, I find that sometimes, this is not enough advance planning.

If the group is prepared to split up, then it shouldn't be a problem - you'll just be 15 people on a pilgrimage with the rest of the people walking the same direction. If you all want to stay together though, I would book ahead.

This would be the Albergue Casa Barbadelo in the village of Barbadelo 4kms beyond Sarria.

I have stayed there twice and would thoroughly recommend it.
