Hi everyone,

This question is for anyone who recently started in SJPP. I’m curious what the weather is like in Roncesvalles? Specifically is there a lot of snow on the ground? We’re starting on February 25th. Thanks for any help on this.

Perhaps ask closer to your start date maybe the 24th Feb.
Checkout the website below

Any snow that may be on the ground will have melted by the time you arrive.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
As above!

However, on a related note, the Pyrenean ski resorts are having the worst ski season in recent memory due to lack of snow and cold temps.

You can watch for yourself on the Iraty webcam. This webcam is installed at a distance of about 10 miles to the east of Roncesvalles and at about the same altitude of 1000 m. You cannot only see what the weather is like today but also what it was like on any day during the past 2+ years.

January and February are winter months in the Atlantic Pyrenees. It can snow and it cannot snow. There can be old or new snow on the ground at this altitude and there can be none at this altitude. When there is no snow today, it does not mean that there is no snow tomorrow or next week or in a month when you will be there. Buen Camino!

Do you have a link for the webcam?
Here it is:

PS: I noticed that they have now marked three mountain tops (click on icons): The closest one is 2017 m and the more distant ones are 1923 m and 1823 m.

Hi again, @Gianni3333! Are you already in SJPP? You said that you intend to start walking tomorrow, February 25th.

As chance would have it, snowfall is back in the region, and even at the level of 800 m to 1000 m altitude, which is the top range of the way through Valcarlos. Do check with the SJPP welcome office to hear whether they advise pilgrims to keep walking on the Valcarlos-Roncesvalles road and to not venture onto the hiking trail parallel to it.

A weather warning has been issued by the Spanish meteorological office for the region, currently for the morning of the 25th that predicts snow accumulation of 5 cm over 24 hours. This accumulation of snow on the ground will happen at altitude levels of about 800 m and higher.

Buen Camino, do keep warm and dry, and do let us know how it was.

Thank you! We arrive in SJPP today. We will start tomorrow. Thank you for the weather update.

@Gianni3333, I hope that you are enjoying your walk. Today looks again like a wintery day in the area of Ibañeta on the Valcarlos road, at least judging by the Iraty webcam:

Oh, there is video clip, from today it seems, of somebody actually walking on the Valcarlos road past the Ibañeta chapel. Snow and howling wind. I can't embed it directly into this post, you need to click on the link to the ABC website first. It is worth watching for anyone who wants to know what it is like today. And none of us could have predicted it four weeks ago at the start of this thread.

The OP never reported back and we are now already in March. Julio Asunción who lives in the area has made a video and walked around Roncesvalles and the Roncesvalles albergue and on the Valcarlos route near Ibañeta to show how much snow there was two days ago. It has snowed more in the meantime. Enjoy.
