Garmin GPS Map

Hi all,

Does anyone have a Garmin Map for Camino Frances (SJPdP - Santiago) as i am looking at buying the Oregon GPS.

I know that GPS's are not required, but just as a safety net i want to take one.

For maps, try Open Street Maps and choose a Garmin compatible download format if you don't want to purchase the Garmin mapping of Spain.

If you are really referring to having a track of someone's previous route, then Peter Robins' site is a good option.

If you are unfamiliar with GPSs, be careful thinking they provide any form of 'safety net'. They are a navigation aid, and can tell you very accurately where you are, and where you have been, but if you are in trouble, that alone will not be much help if you cannot contact someone.

If you or your family are concerned about possible safety issues, carry a mobile, a SPOT or even get an EPIRB (although that is probably a little extreme).

A friend of mine did a week, along the camino a couple of years ago.....he walked 10km in the wrong way on his first day....a gps would have come in handy for him.

My experience is that the GPS doesn't make the arrows any more visible! It only takes a moment to miss one, and you are then wandering off and the GPS telling you exactly where you are doesn't really help. The track of my first hour or so on the CF from SJPP is a hoot ... now!

That said, I found the OSM mapping a useful complement to the mapping in Brierley when I took a wrong turn much later. It had the detail that Brierley didn't that allowed me to get to Triacastella without going back up the ridge line just past Biduedo.

Walking wrong is part of the experience....and yes, I hear many people who walked wrong starting from Roncesvalles in the very beginning of the Camino. But he, you just walked the road, it’s easy to walk back and there’s many people to ask. I would say: use googlemaps for your inner rest if need be but don’t carry additional weight. For the bike trip, mmm, might be something to say for it?

Absolutely no need to take a gps, you will always be pointed back to the way even driven back in a car or tractor by the locals. If you don't see a pilgrim for a little while turn back and find the arrows, the weight is more important than anything. Please don't not over pack, that's when it goes wrong. I second google maps as a backup if you are a worried (and have no sense of direction
