Time of past OR future Camino
March '2013'
My name is David. I live in Diss, which is Nofolk, England. I'm planning to walk during the first 3 weeks in March 2013. I'm planning to start from O Cebreiro.

This is my first question. I'm flying into Santiago on the morning of the 1st March. I'm told I can catch a bus outside of the airport directly to O Cebreiro. Is this true? Anyone got any details. (i'm want to make life easy for myself on day 1).

All the best,
David

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Buses do not go to O Cebreiro. The closest stop is Piedrafita do Cebreiro. You can get a taxi from there.

Hi David
welcome to the forum
you say you want to make things easy on the first day-how about just catching the bus as far as Lugo on day one-it has a beautiful walled old town(check it out shame to miss out)
"Lugo is the only city in the world to be surrounded by completely intact Roman walls, which reach a height of 10 to 15 metres (33 to 49 ft) along a 2,117-metre (6,946 ft) circuit ringed with 71 towers. The walk along the top is continuous round the circuit, and features ten gates. These 3rd century walls are protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site".
and an modern Albergue in its centre,at the bus station you can find out your bus for the next morning have time to wander round the old town plus a easy introduction to Albergue life which will be mostly empty as opposed to mostly full in Cebreiro where you will have time to wander round this tourist town while its still light enough to enjoy the great views while at the same time as making the transision between Norfolk and Spain-Kansas and Oz :)

O Cebreiro is perched on a mountain eyrie at 1300m.
About 4.5km down the hill is the town Piedrafita O Cebreiro. The bus doesnt go up the hill to the little hamlet.
If you get off at Piedrafita, you can walk up to O Cebreiro. Its a steep road but there is a resting place half-way up.
Whether to walk up the hill or not will depend on the weather. If you are walking the first week of March you could encounter snow storms and blizzards, in which case it would be safest to continue on the road to Triacastela.
On the other hand, it could be gloriously clear, in which case you should walk up the hill!
Buen Camino!

Many thanks to you all for your advice. I've made a note of everything.
All the best,
David
