Hello all,

Just a quick introduction as no doubt over the coming months i will be popping up in the various topics asking questions as they occur to me

A little bit about myself My name is Darren i'm a 32 year old Londoner hoping to do the full trek from my front door starting early next year, either by myself or with my best friend James (if he can take the time off work).

At the moment everything is very much in the planning stages, so if you see what seems a naive or silly question posted in my name please be patient with me because at the moment i'm just glad to have made the commitment and am trying not to get overwhelmed with all the infomation i need.

Anyway thanks in advance for any help and i look forward to getting to know you all

good to hear from you both, always good to know others have done it from london or would like to do it - makes me feel a lot less wierd for wanting to do this
have spent the last few weeks just reading everything i can about the camino, and putting it around to all my friends and family that i'm going next year (incase anyone wants to do it with me)
my planning hasn't really started yet apart from a blissful couple of hours spent in millets a couple of saturdays ago, where i forced a very patient sales assistant to allow me to try on every pair of hiking boots they stock.
told them next payday i'm going back for my rucksack - i fully expect every sale assistant to flee at sight of me.
must admit i'm really starting to get into the whole planning thing almost as much i'm looking forward to actually starting.

Planning is just about my favorite part. I get to anticipate and experience beforehand all of the eventualities of my camino. I love reviewing all of my journals from previous caminos. I love weighing everything, going over every little item and examining it for its utility, trying everything on, getting the opinions of my family and friends. It can go on for months and months. It's what keeps the camino alive in my heart and mind and soul between the times when I can actually walk a camino. I get to read everyone's experiences, recommendations and cautions on the forum.

This is so vital to me, and it's how I sustain myself between caminos.

Hi Darren,
Far from being 'wierd' I think you are very sensible! The most meaningful thing I did was start from home. Well, from Exeter Cathedral actually, then walking to home, then onward to Plymouth and the ferry to Santander. I spent 40 days without using any form of transport except the boat across to Spain. What was wierd was the taxi ride out to the hotel in Santander, where I met up with my wife.
As others have said, you will find that the planning is a joy. Ask questions, plan and replan, and be prepared for the culture shock when you actually go!
If you are going through France, then you have two languages to deal with . . . .
