How to get to Irun from Leon

Camino Frances, SJPP - Logroño 2016
Logroño - Ponferrada (Sept. 2017)
Ponferrada - Santiago (2018?)
I'm looking for recommendations on the best way to get from Leon to Irun. Google's suggestions include traveling to Madrid to get to Irun. That's counterintuitive. My 3 adult children and I are starting the Camino del Norte after a family vacation that ends in Ponferrada in early April 2024. Thanks for your help.
