March 2018 start advice

Hi, I am planning to start my Camino from Le Puy on 25th March. I am having slight trouble finding information about whether the route is open at that time. Would anyone be able to help me with information regarding this route at this time of year and what the likelihood that the refuges will be open along it at that time?

Any other information you wish to share would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi there

I dont think the track ever actually closes - but at that time of year I would expect very few hikers and even fewer Gites or other accommodation to be open. You will also have some pretty cold days - especially in the first week or so climbing up to and across the Massif Central. I (a fellow Aussie) started in Le Puy Aug/Sept 2017 and it was starting to get cold by then - but no snow. Once past Aubrac you should be good as you are primarily down lower until the Pyrenees.

This year (2018), March 25 falls on Palm Sunday. You will be walking the week before Easter ("Holy Week"), as well as the week after. Many other walkers will also take advantage of the holiday to join you on the Chemin. In MMD, many lodgings will indicate they are open from Easter to All Saints (Paschal a Toussaint). You will want to make reservations, at least a day in advance, as is the norm in France. For that first week, March 25 - April 2, I would reserve ahead for every night, including especially Le Puy.
