Meaning of Camino Markers other than the yellow arrows

On the Camino I noticed military unit style markers small rectangle plates of 2 or 3 colours I can't recall the colours and don't have a photo, are these markers related to the Camino? Do they have a meaning?

You might be thinking of the GR (gran route) markings. These long distance trails sometime coimcide with the camino paths.

Yes it was, but most times it was a metal plate nailed to a tree or post etc.

White over red is the balise marking in France for the GR (grande randonee) routes. It is carried over into Spain occasionally on the Camino Frances (GR-65).

Thank you for your replies, my curiosity has been satisfied. Similar style route markers are used by the Australian army, different colours for different units.
