Mojones in Germany

Was on a hike on easter sunday in the Dün, a small hillrange in Thuringia near Bad Heiligenstadt.

What a nice surprise to find several mojones in the forest (parts of Via Regia and Loccum-Volkenroda and the soon to be established Eichsfeld Camino, the Eichsfeld region is mostly catholic).
On the front the shell, the sides A & O, on the back the seal of the elector Archbishop of Mainz (a red wheel).

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

I got curious 😊, first because there are no elector archbishops anymore and secondly because it seems that you must have walked in a region that is pretty far away from the town of Mainz. I had a look on Wikipedia. Interesting. Thanks for sharing. What does the A and O stand for on this waymarker?

The Pieterpad in Holland strays into Germany for a little bit between Spijk and Braamt, as it is a shortcut. In 2017 it was a surprise to run into a steel job identifying the path I was on as the way to Santiago.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
@Roland49 , came across several when I was doing my Hospitaleros course in Uder. (I walked through town on the Eichsfelder Jakobsweg, very well marked). They, a bronze pilgrim, and a large sign promoting the way are in my YouTube video.

I think I saw it as well. Near Elten, while walking the Nordrheinische Jakobsweg to Koln.
Which is on the way to Santiago. :)

*What does the A and O stand for on this waymarker?

I asked myself the same question

It refers to Alpha and Omega. A is for Alpha (the beginning, where I come from) and O for Omega (the ending, showing pilgrims the direction).

For some more information about the waymarkers of the Eichswalder Jakobsweg, see also:

It's a very traditional region and the Eichsfeld was one of the northernmost parts of the Archbishops territorium. In the case of Mainz they held both clerical and state governmental positions. In Bad Heiligenstadt you find the "Mainz Palace", a subsidiary palace of the Archbishops.
