I am in the planning stages for walking Pamplona-Burgos in May 2012. Wish I had more time, but I don't. Flying into Pamplona seems to be an expensive proposition. The alternatives (flying from Northeast USA) to get to Pamplona are diverse and mind-boggling :?: .

Do I fly into Madrid? to Barcelona? To Bilbao? What do you think it the most advantageous way?

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
You can get a bus from Madrid airport to Pamplona for about 35 euros. It takes 5-6 hours with one change on the way.

Hi, Olivares,
Internal bus journeys in Spain are very cheap, because they are greatly subsidised.

You can get from Madrid Airport to Pamplona for less than €30. So if a flight to Madrid is a lot cheaper than one to Pamplona take the Madrid option. It also gives you a chance to see a bit of the country.

The bus company is http://www.alsa.es.

If you will be late arriving in Pamplona you could book into a hostel. Try http://www.Hostelworld.com or
www hostelbookers.com . I would recommend hostel Hemmingway. It worked out at €19 for a bed in a six bed dorm and is about ten or fifteen minutes walk from the bus station

I would fly into Madrid or Barcelona. I took a quick look for two weeks in May of 2012. You could get a ticket for around $900. from Newark to either. Then it would be a $50. train ride of 3 to 3 1/2 hours to Pamplona. Madrid had many more trains options than Barcelona.

If you book a connecting flight on to your final destination from Madrid or Barcelona, there is often not much of an increase at all. It needs to be on Iberia or an airline which code-shares with them.

I've always found the cheapest flights on Iberia (from Washington DC) and the madrid-pamplona flight and the Santiago=madrid flight tagged onto the dc-madrid roundtrip cost less than $100 extra. Try the iberia website and put in a roundtrip and click flexible dates. When you find the cheapest roundtrip from U.S. then click the option where you can add on flight legs, and choose the cheap date, and add the flights.
