Plan Portuguese Camino in July 2023
As in life, our Camino plans sometimes have to be “changed on the fly”. Last year, I walked the Camino Frances from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostello. My wife, Zelda joined me for the last 123km from Sarria to the Cathedral in Santiago. Although we had everything planned, things still changed at the last moment without any warning or explanation and we had to hastily make new arrangements while I was still on my pilgrimage.

But that is part of the joy of life. Every day a new challenge and it won’t help us complaining.

So, I have a lot of sympathy for those that had to change their plans (or even cancel them) for their much anticipated 2020 Camino.

Read the attached document to see how we had to do “changes on the fly”. The hyperlink called “Route” on the left hand top corner of page 1 is my route on Google Maps.

I am making plans to walk the Camino de Levante, listing distances to every acceptable albergue, hotel, etc. along the route, except for the most expensive (I may stay in one or two paradors). If I can go on camino, I don't know what will be open next year. Or what distances I shall be able to walk, after my long COVID-19 holiday. And who knows, I may find myself spending half my nights in that empty room over the bar that was not on any of my lists, or a night or two in a ditch, wrapped up in my sleeping bag. I am looking forward to the adventure.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Allow me to patronize you a bit whippersnapper. We old forts k-n-o-w that nothing but absolutely nothing occurs on the Camino, before the Camino or after the Camino by chance - it was meant to be. Not Buddhism not really karma simply Camino. Planned to walk from Barcelona up through Monastery of San Juan de la Pena (Jaca) to hit Pamplona and go on from there. Barcelona? Gaudi Frank Ghery's Gefilte fish (something dear to us Jewish pilgrims) the Ramblas...too many tapas too much Priorat and I was ...ah...not so able to walk out the next morning. So off for a train ride to Montserrat Monastery - pilgrim right? I walked up no problem they stamped my credencial and I walked down to the train station. We old forts can usually climb better then descend twisted an ankle and could hardly move. Pamplona was achieved by train. Setting out after resting my ankle, met a Hungarian pilgrim, she had twisted her ankle crossing the Puente de la Magdalena and taking a photo while coming into Pamplona! We had a wonderful week limping along, Springtime and she a botanist knowing all the European wildflowers and I a nature freak knowing those from the Mediterranean basin- it was marvelous. Take heart!
