San Anton: A Little History

This one's a fundraiser: Buy the little book, and help bring reliable water supply to Albergue San Anton, Castrojeriz!

Two historian/writers, an illustrator and a graphic designer, all former pilgrims, collaborated to create this limited-edition, palm-sized "art book" of easy-to-read info on the ruined hospital and abbey at San Anton de Castrojeriz, now a scruffy, bare-bones albergue. Who was San Anton, how did this Egyptian hermit get to northern Spain, what is St. Anthony's Fire, and what was life like at the medical monastery in its heyday? -- and what's up with the pig? It's all here, packaged sweetly and ready for giving to your favorite Camino fan. Proceeds benefit the water-system upgrade for the albergue.

Question: what king of water system can you get done for so little money? You say there are 500 copies at 5€ each, less printing costs, that does not leave much.

My copy of the book arrived this morning and it is a beautifully produced publication, congratulations to all involved. I especially liked the Peaceable Kingdom sello on the front of the envelope. Now all my Camino friends will be getting a copy in their Christmas stocking - if stocks last! Thank you.

Yep, I wondered about that too. So I ordered two copies just now and overpaid for a good cause. Probably just like everybody else here, no?

I bought a copy when I stayed at San Anton last week. I haven't read it yet, as the plastic envelope seems my best chance of getting it home undamaged through another three weeks of pilgrimage.

Thanks for the good words. At Peaceable, we opt for quality over quantity, and thus choose to use these old-fashioned snail-mail distribution methods. The quality of graphics and art will not translate to downloadable PDF or print-on-demand Amazon platforms, and I want to limit the edition -- I don't mind doing this for a while, but not forever, thanks!

This little book is not meant to finance the entire water project. It's just a way to get some awareness going, and to get some San Anton info into the public square that's in English (this is a first!). It's also, to be honest, a way to chivvy along the people in charge who must commission the engineering studies and budgeting needed to start the work!

Happy to say that two important international camino groups already have contacted me about making larger commitments to support the San Anton Water effort. Now we just gotta get things moving on the ground!

Just received my copy, thank you Rebekah.

It's a lovely little book that explains the history of one of the Caminos' most remarkable landmarks. I was happy to learn the symbolism of the silver arm charms I have seen people wearing.

A nice addition to anyone's Camino collection and an excellent cause.
