Shop opening hours in SJPdP

Hi,

We arrive on Sunday 2nd June in SJPdP, stay over night, and walk the first etappe to Roncesvalle on Monday.

My question: Do you know the opening hours for the shops in SJPdP on Sundays, where one can buy food?

I am sure there are some shops open like the Casino food stores, some are open Sunday morning only but no fear- you can eat breakfast after 6 km walk in Hounto and then Orisson. But I suggest you walk the first 6 km and stay the night at Hounto, it'll be easier the next day to Roncevalles.

France closes on Sunday and Monday, including Petit Casinos (I don't think there is one in SJPdP). In a pilgrim town like SJPdP something will be open, but expect a late opening, 9 a.m. or later, and expect them to be closed Sunday afternoon. You will do best to shop before the Saturday closing, usually about 7 p.m. Huntto serves breakfast, but I don't think it does so for walk-by traffic. You can get lunch. Orisson has a bar, so it will have food.

One easy to find food store in SJPdP is Alimentation Irigaray, 12 rue d'Espagne, tel. 05 59 37 02 55. The rue d'Espagne is the westward continuation of the rue de La Citadelle which is THE pilgrim street, where the Pilgrim office, Amis du Chemin de Saint Jacques, is located at 39. After you arrive in SJPdP and obtain your Pilgrim Passport/Credential from the Amis simply stroll down a few blocks to either buy food or check morning opening hours. The Camino follows the rue de La Citadelle/rue d'Espagne westward leaving the town so the store is very handy for departing pilgrims.

When I arrived in SJPP on Sunday nothing was open. There was still nothing open when we left Monday morning. But as an earlier poster mentioned, the first cafes are only a couple hours out so just try to bring enough to hold you that long.

I arrived 16:00 on Easter Sunday in 2011 and didn't have a problem finding un petit magasin to buy some food in for the next day's walk.

I bought some fruits and crackers at a small market on Rue Citadelle across from the Church by the Spanish Gate. I bought a bottle of water at Orisson, which is possibly the last option for purchasing food before Roncesvalles.
