Leaving Vigo by Renfe early April 24 for either Ponferrada or Astorga in order to get to Iron Cross to start 11 day walk to Santiago. Which station is best and is there a bus that passes the Cross or is a taxi the only means apart from by foot.

Attended the Toronto meeting on Sat Mar 31. Must have been 200 there. All super enthusiastic and one veteran of 5 or 6 Caminos announced she was going to walk barefoot this summer from Ponferrada to SDC! Barefoot!!!!! Wow and Wow squared.

Many thanks for those who replied to my previous post. Have not figured out how to reply yet but comments much appreciated.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
It will be easier for you to get to Astorga and start from there. There are no trains in the mountains and the Cruz de Ferro is not on a regular bus route. It is about 30km from Astorga in a fairly isolated part of the route. You can get a taxi there from Astorga. Most taxis charge abour €1 per km.

Get to Astorga and from there take a taxi to Foncebadon , 5 km before the cross, easy walking-or take it straight to the cross. I woudn't start from AStorga, 11 days is too tight. Start from Foncebadon or the cross.
I did it 2009-35 Euros.
