The number of compostelas increased 6.5% from last year to set a record again. Notable is that the split between male and female is pretty much 50:50. Per national population, Ireland continues to be first!!

Wow, Camino de Invierno gaining attention obviously. With 145 pilgrims in just one month (5 per day started it on average) and surely some more that didn't claim their Compostelas.

Interesting. I'm actually curious how they split the various Portuguese entry, I walked from Lisboa, using Costa from Porto to Redondela, wonder where I'm accounted for

The increase on the Invierno is incredible. Especially if you take into account that these will be seasoned pilgrims, who might not all go after their Compostela. I walked there in summer 2015 and I only met 1 other pilgrim. He lived in the area and was just doing 2 stages over the weekend.

With the Norte and the Primitivo I always wonder how they are counting. If somebody walks the Norte and then changes to the Primitivo, which Camino is he/she counted for? Can 1 person be registered for 2 Caminos?

Because I have better things to do (like packing...), I dived into the Norte numbers and put them in geographic order, to get an idea how and where the Norte is growing.

Luka those numbers don't include starting places in Galicia, that could be the difference + to confuse it a bit more those people who started way back I would hazard a guess that around 50% went on the Primitivo after Oviedo, that's my experience of being on the Norte twice and San Salvador/Primitivo once. It probably depends on the person doing your Compostela with which route you get marked against.

The numbers will start to be more heavily skewed in favor of Spanish pilgrims any day now. As we draw nearer to the Feast of Santiago, I have noticed each year while working at the office that the arriving pilgrim mix becomes predominately Spanish and Portuguese from the third week of July through August.

On an annual basis, Spanish pilgrims run ABOUT half of the total number. But during the summer months, as groups make their pilgrimages, this percentage rises to exceed 75 percent on some days.

It would be very interesting to be able to get the raw data to slice and dice. Of course, there are no names involved, as they are not retained. But all the information you write on the sheet of paper as you are waiting to get your Compostela is in the system, somewhere.

Hmmm? I think I will raise that issue this summer. I will be there in about 10 days to start my annual month of service at the Pilgrim Office. this could be an interesting demographic analysis. it might even help to improve services...

The albergue infraestructure is not safe enough for staying those horses at night.

Earlier this year I saw some work which had been done to make part of the Camino Sanabres more accessible by horse. No idea what the situation about stabling the horses might be though. I'll stick to walking...

The group of six had a van/truck as support vehicle.
While I was eating at pension O'Mesón in O Pino (C.Francés) they arrived and left their horses in the old barn that the pension has.
When I asked the owner he told me that it was not normal and the place wasn´t included in any kind of infraestucture for horses.

They never provide a full list in these shorter internet summaries, as there can be dozens of starting places with 1 or 2 pilgrims only -- even hundreds for the Francès.

Many of those riding to Santiago do so with an agency of some sort that takes care of the horses and everything else. All the "pilgrim" has to do is ride the horse from point a to point b.

Yes, we walked the Portuguese from Lisbon and onto the coastal route from Porto. No one asked which route I had taken.
