I just got home from giving a talk on walking the Potuguese Camino tonight when I checked the forum and sawVincent's story. At first read I wondered why he was leaving, but as I read further I can understand why. Maybe he is being called to being a priest and spread the word of God to the people.

A little further north, these views of paradise become more like purgatory as the road crosses the Po Valley. Between Pavia and Santhià, rice fields extend for as far as the eye can see, offering an “extremely monotonous landscape with very straight lines.” The heat and stagnant water in the rice fields attract “lots of mosquitoes,” Vincent recalls. These days were “a great test of patience,” he adds.

going on foot to rome and returning back home after service is not so uncommon amongst swiss guards. I've met another just two months later, also going home.
