With this please keep in mine I leave Saturday morning for the walk.

I have a Northface outrider 60 pack. The internal frame just cracked. The crack is from the top going down about 2.5 inches (6.35cm). The top part of the plastic frame still together because of the nylon trim sewed in. It is cracked down the center and has kind thrown the support off. I have called a couple shopes around me (Northface and REI). They can't help in such a short time.

Should I just try to temp fix it and take it with me? If u need to is it possible to find a new pack in a bigger town/city? If so what might the cost of that be? Should I just buy a new pack now ?

I have $2000.00 US dollars for my trip so a new pal would cut in to that.

Thanks for any thoughts.

If you possibly can, I would get a new - or used, by all means! try ebay? craigslist? can you borrow one from a friend? - and smaller pack and let the Camino show you where you can find that money. Staying in the albergues, sharing a cooked meal in the evening, one less café con leche here, one less glass of vino tinto there, and you'll soon have made it up. It doesn't have to be expensive as long as it is smallish, about 35 litres, and you only bring the bare essentials. The pack you've got doesn't seem to want to come with you. Maybe it isn't meant to. I have heard wonderful things about REI, why don't you go there and see what they can find for you? Bring your gear and try the packs in the shop with your kit inside, so you know there is enough room and that it feels good. Search this forum for 'packing list' and you will find many good ways of reducing the pack weight! You still have time before you leave, I hope you have time to decide what to do without getting stressed out. It's the Camino. It will be fine.

Buen Camino!

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Ouch !! Bad luck, but I don't think you can take that pack with you with the idea that it will last, and it will need replacing.

hmmmmmm, I'm not sure where you live nor where you're starting from nor how much time you have nor what your travel arrangements are, so it's hard to advise whether you should replace it before departure, or at your landing point or starting point -- particularly as concerns cost ; though google suggests you'll have not very much choice at SJPP if you're starting from there...

If you've enough time on your hands to look for a new pack in the city of your arrival by plane, before going on to your starting point, that might be the best plan -- though again, no idea about cost, and your knowledge of sportswear shops near your home may lead you to a better deal than you'd be able to find abroad.

hmmmm tough one !!! Good luck with it, and Buen Camino !!!

SJPP-SdC (4-5/2011), Ferrol-SdC (9/2011), Pamplona-SdC (3-4/2012), Camino Finisterre (10/2012), Ourense-SdC (5/2014)
Hi. As it's affecting the performance of the pack it's probably a good idea to change it before you leave if possible, or expect to change it fairly soon after arrival.

Assuming you're doing the Frances and starting around SJPP, it could well last the first few days to Pamplona, where you will be able to get a new one. KinkyOne has already mentioned Caminoteca, and although the website suggests they don't sell full-sized backpacks Istvan is a friend of the forum and will advise where is best to go.

All major cities have a branch of El Corte Ingles, which is a department store so may not have the choice or specialist advice, but here's a link to their website to give you an idea of what's available there and to compare prices in Spain with home.

Good luck and Buen Camino!

The Osprey Talon 33 is a Camino favourite, and they sell it at REI: http://www.rei.com/product/808309/osprey-talon-33-pack
Or maybe this, at the same price and weight but with a bit more room to reduce the shock of going from 60 to 35 litres: http://www.rei.com/product/844660/rei-flash-45-pack
I would think it's easier to find one where you are, where you know the language and shops in the area, and so that you can relax as soon as you're on the flight.

Buen Camino, let us know how it works out!

Well I've decided to make a go of it with this pack. It may not be the right choice but It was a new pack or my travel insurance and the insurance won. I will make it any way I must!

Thanks for the tips and ideas all. I can't wait!

Buen Camino!

REI fitted me with the Gregory Z30. I have packed it with everything I intend to carry on the Camino Frances in July, have walked many miles on conditioning hikes. It's an excellent backpack and has sufficient room to overload the bag beyond the recommended 10 kilos. I recommend it for your consideration.

Or to anyone else considering which gear to take or not on the Camino. A great general rule is to remember that less really is more....AND trust that the Way really does provide all that you need. Take less, travel lighter, have a better trip.
