Temperatures (or water supply) on VdlP may cause albergue to close

I’m in Aldeanueva today. It’s very hot (at least for me) 27+ degrees today. The hospitalero at Casa de mi Abuela says they ..and other businesses.. may close soon until heat wave passes. It will be 30+ in coming days. He also mentioned he’s getting cancellations every day. The area reservoir is almost dry because there was no rain this spring so he expects water restrictions to be introduced. This is one local talking about the problem but thought I’d mention as it might be useful to call ahead if you are headed this way. Today and yesterday I met pilgrims who walked only 10km because of heat and then took bus or taxi to accommodation. Stay cool everyone 🥵.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Surprised to hear about albergues potentially closing for those temperatures when they are open in the summer when 35c+ is the norm. I walked my first Plata in July and in spite of the high temperatures they remained open, sometimes supermarkets closed early and there were few people in the streets in the afternoon but it was for the most part business as usual.

The current problem may in fact be due to the water situation rather than the temperature but thanks of course for letting pilgrims here know.

I agree it may be because of water situation. My Spanish is ‘so-so’ but the hospitalero spoke pretty good English.

So sorry to hear that. It must be because of the water. I walked in late October of 2021 and the temperatures out of Sevilla were that high and even a little higher. Although I did not stay there, I was told by other pilgrims that Casa de Mi Abuela is a warm and welcoming place. Things were much cooler by the time I got there. I had already walked about three weeks by then.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Shocking, but rather becoming the norm in future years. The problem has been building up in Spain over recent years and water will become a big problem in the future. Sad :-(

I stayed in Casa de mi Abuela in early May last year and the hospitalerio was really friendly, helpful and welcoming. He seemed to be running the albergue on his own, washing the floors when we arrived. He said he’d look after our backpacks and could we return in twenty minutes or so once the floors were dry. The village is lovely.
