Valenca or Tui?

Join our full-service guided tour of the Basque Country and let us pamper you!
Walking north to Tui on the camino from Valenca do Minho which was the old frontier you pass through a spendid a 17thc fortress designed by Vauban and then cross the river Minho on the 19th c International bridge designed by Eiffel. The view to Tui as the lights come on at dusk is splendid! Within the fortress the camino passes through the garden of the pousada/hotel Sao Teotonio. Stop at their outdoor bar to sip a coffee or more, relax and admire that panoramic view.

Bom caminho and Buen caminho!

Hi Maria, we stayed at the municipal Albergue S. Teotonio right next to the walls of the fortress in Valencia.....we arrived a bit late so only saw the fortress next morning when we walked through it en route to the bridge. I can imagine it would be very touristy during the day but for us it was wonderful as not a soul around (actually that was a problem as we couldnt even find a coffee and roll for breakfast until we crossed the bridge - and even then it was a run-down cafe just after the customs post). The albergue was fine but a group of cyclists arrived and made a barbecue in the car park which was pretty noisy....then tiredness took over. Also eating options near the Albuerge were somewhat limited but in the end it all worked out (as it always seems to do on the Camino !).
I dont remember being particularly impressed with Tui other than its setting looking out over the river. In view of time constraints we did take a train at Tui to Pontevedra via Redondela..........

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

What acommodation you would suggest starting walk from Valenca( Tui) to Santiago?
Lovely description, keep writing

Another vote for Tui. Ideas Peregrinas is a fresh, almost trendy place to stay in the old quarter. There's a cafe in the check-in area. Tui is a charming hilltop town with a wonderful mostly Romanesque cathedral at the top. Ideas Peregrinas has private rooms as well as dorms. You can always hit the Fort/historic area in Valenca on the way through to Tui before you cross the grated external walkway (yikes) on the bridge between Portugal and Spain.

In Valença is an albergue and are several cheap hotels.
If walking the Central route from Rubiães there is a privat albergue , Quinta Estrada Romana, just a couple of kms before Valença where it seems to be a similar atmosphere as Casa da Fernanda. I haven't been there because last year approached Valença from a different direction but I heard from pilgrims that it was a great place. https://m.facebook.com/quintaestradaromana/
Staying there and walking the next day you walk through the Valença fortress and on the Eiffel bridge and through Tui. Only highlights on your path.

Pega bem e bom caminho
