Hola, fellow peregrinas/peregrinos. Some advice which is too late for me. If you have really good poles (or just poles you'd hate to lose), insist that you keep your poles by your bedside. After a very nice evening at San Miguel albergue in Hospital de Orbigo, I discovered my very good Leki poles had been taken. Since I had my name written on them in silver ink, 3 Canadian flags stickers on each, and duct tape on one (I just used the tape from the other to temporarily repair my trekking sandal), it's highly unlikely they were taken by mistake.

Watch out for them on your further walk to Santiago! Somebody leaving early in the dark might still have mistakenly grabbed them and eventually not know how to get them back to you.
You might post the description of your poles again on the Forum in a few days time, before a likely arrival in Santiago, and under the caption of "lost walking poles".
Unfortunately I suspect that there must be lots of them lost along the trail for one reason or the other. :cry:

Does anybody but me worry that even if poles are allowed into an albergue, they'll have to be carried everywhere so as not to be "taken by mistake"? i.e., the shower, going out to eat, etc. Mine can be taken apart but even so, don't fit all the way into my backpack. What do others do to keep their poles safe inside the albergue?

just out of curiosity, how many other maple leafs were on display in addition to those six?

(Ok, I'll admit, there might be one or two on my bike)

My poles were ´´taken ´´ after 400 km and I actually think I saw them again before in Arzua. The last 380 km went OK without the poles so I hope my poles helped somebody else.

Annie, I know what I would have done in that situation, particularly if they still had my markings on: "Oh you found my missing poles, Thank you SO much!" I too walk with my poles LEKI and LEKI which give me great support. I had to leave them once in a hallway in Villa Montes de Oca along with other pilgrim poles, and did worry that someone might take them by accident. Next time I'm out, I don't think I will be as trusting - hard to believe that another 'pigrim' would swipe anothers poles like that. I hope the rest of your journey made up for it.

Yep, I was wearing my Canadian identity proudly. But sadly, I lost more and more of it along the Way. After my poles disappeared, all that remained was the Canadian Company of Pilgrims badge sewn on my pack.

I first lost my little maple leaf flag pin from my knapsack strap. Then my I <3 CBC button from my fanny pack. Then my poles.

Totally confused some folks that I was Canadian. They thought I had to be Korean or Japanese since I'm oriental (parents from China). I rather liked opening people up to the possibility that Canada is a multicultural nation.

As it turned out, maybe the Camino intended for me to go without poles for I discovered I could walk much faster without them. But I needed them going up and down hills so I did buy replacements in Ponferrada.
