What I will leave at Cruz de Ferro

Camino Frances: September 24 - October 31 (2015)
My father died this past Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at the age of 93. On Tuesday, I leave for my first Camino, setting out from SJPDP on September 24. For the longest time, I couldn't decide what to leave at Cruz de Ferro. In my Dad's last days it finally came to me. My Dad was a virtuoso clarinetist in his day. While he was many things to all of us, his amazing clarinet playing was the most striking way that he brought beauty into this world during his life. To honor my Dad's memory, I have decided to place a simple clarinet reed at the foot of the cross at Cruz de Ferro. I have included a photo of the reed that I will leave. In his way, my Dad will be making the journey with me.

Hello Tom,
I am so sorry for your terrible loss. My most sincere condolences to you and your family. May your Camino walk help you on the road to peace.
As a clarinetist as well, I can't think of a better tribute of your father to leave at the Cruz de Ferro.
All my best to you.

My heartfelt condolences Tom. It is a lovely thing you are doing to honour in his memory. I start a day after you and as a newbie oldie, likely will not catch up but I do wish you Buen Camino….

Hola Tom, I also pass on my sympathy. As to what to leave, well after my experience this morning I would ask that it is "just a stone". Maybe some from your home! Far too much garbage there this morning (imho).

I brought two small rocks, one for my dad (it's 50 years in October since his death) the other was for step-father who died on St James day this year. Buen Camino

Condolences Tom on your loss. You will find Cruz De Ferro a perfect place to leave your tribute to your Dad.I find it so emotional a place I once described it as a mountain of memories floating on a sea of tears.May your God guide your footsteps and I wish you a Buen Camino.

That's a beautiful thought and gesture Tom. Music is the universal language without words and your tribute sounds like a fitting one to your Dad. I'm sure you'll feel him with you on The Way. Buen Camino.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Heartfelt condolences, Tom--your Father seems to have left his corner of the world a more beautiful place, such a gift.
And what a perfect thing to leave--and a perfect time to walk!

For those who are thinking to leave bigger and not biodegradable momentos (photos, rosaries, etc...), please know that they appear to be removed from time to time. So don't expect your precious family keepsake of a beloved one to stay there--unless you leave it under a rock!
Someone else here might know and be able tell us who does this, and whether it's official...but it's not a bad thing. Otherwise the clutter up there would be immense.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
My deepest sympathies on your sad loss. When i walked in 2014 i brought 2 stones from my parents grave but somehow lost them on the way. I was very upset but when i arrived at Cruz de Ferro i found i left my heart there and the emotion and sense of peace that i felt as i continued on my way lives with me to this day.

On a misty morning in May I was making my way up to the Cruz de Fero. A lone pilgrim stood by the path and played the blues, beautifully, on a saxophone for no living human audience. Not wishing to intrude on a sacred moment I waited, out of sight, until he had finished.

Walk gently on your camino and remember your father in the quiet places.
