Helloo,

I am looking for suggestions on where to stay the first 2 days starting the camino frances from SJPDP. I am physically able to walk, so can you please recommend good albergues to stay in the first 2 days? I am looking forward to meeting new people but would like to avoid very crowds such as in roncesvalles if possible.

Thank you!

Yor choices are somewhat limited

Orisson, Bourda, push to Roncesvalles or go back to SJPdP via Bouricott Express on Day 1

Roncesvalles or slightly beyond on Day 2 if diint make it there on day1 Or if did Zubiri

Check out Gronze.com - it lists all of the albergues and other accommodations on the Camino. It's only in Spanish, but if you use the Chrome browser it will automatically translate into English or the language of your choice.

If you don't want to walk all the way to Roncesvalles the first day on the Napoleon route your choices are to stay at Auberge Borda, Refuge Orisson, or use the Express Bourricot Mountain Shuttle. Or you can walk via Valcarlos and spend the night in the albergue there.

In Roncesvalles there is one large albergue and several hotels.

Join our full-service guided tour of the Basque Country and let us pamper you!
If you do walk via Valcarlos the municipal albergue is small with dorm space for 24 and you can book ahead via turismo@luzaide-valcarlos.net.
There are NO services or supply stops between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles. Be sure to carry trail snacks and water.

Good luck with your plans and Buen camino!

If you are hoping to avoid occasional crowded stretches and busy Albergues then you might do better to choose a different Camino.

The majority of pilgrims that depart StJpdP on any given day in the peak seasons walk to at least Roncesvalles. The 50 odd beds available between Orisson and Borda and the 20 at Valcarlos scarcely make a dent. The 250 or so available in various locations in Roncesvalles can cope for most of the time but even there there are a few days when the beds run out.

Route, and timing, are everything

The Gite de la Porte Saint Jacques is wonderful in SJPP—just up from the pilgrim’s office and the outdoor store. Small, great views, and they send you off right with a morning meditation. Then stay at the Orisson albergue, and then for the 3rd night walk to Burguete, about 3km past Roncevalles. The Albergue Lorentx Aterpea in Burguete is great. Buen Camino!

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
That sounds great,I will start in Orrison and walk to where ever I can find a bed in may ,is anyone else slow walking and enjoying the experience.
If you want to stay at Orisson (or Borda which is just one km farther up the road) you need reservations. Links in my post #3 above.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
The first two weeks of May have always been the busiest, so if you want to sleep in Roncesvalles, make a reservation! It is already very, very busy at the moment, full house every day, we had to send away ten pilgrims yesterday because we were completely full (245 beds). And normally April is still rather quiet - except for the Easter weekend - but this year .... it is totally madness in one word.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I'm leaving SJPP on May 10th. I have the luxury of unlimited time and no plans. Not even a return ticket.
Maybe we meet you on The Way! We are also leaving but one day before your start. We already booked Hotel des Pyrenees and then Borda. We are going very slow too and will take over 2 months. We have also booked Hotel Roncesvalles, Posada Nueva in Biscuit, Txantxorena in Zurbi, Hotel Villava Pamplona in Villava and then three nights in Pamplona at Grand La Perla. Are you going to be stopping in any of these too?

I'm going next summer, and I've already made my reservations for Refuge Orisson for the first night, and Lorentx Aterpea in Burguete for the second night.
