Historical numbers of pilgrims

I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a site/post that would have some numbers from the earlier years--numbers of pilgrims through the middle ages. I have read some comparisons that pilgrims receiving their compostelas now are close to the numbers of the middle ages...is this possible? Thanks for any help
