The bells have not yet rung here in Dublin, but that doesn't prevent me from returning the wishes for health and wellbeing in 2023 to one and all. I wanted to explain a custom from my childhood in Scotland to someone, and I found two images which I will add. The menfolk went first-footing to neighbours and relations, carrying a twist of salt and a lump of coal. I understand the salt was to symbolise the wish for food on the table all year, and the coal, to symbolise the wish for a warm hearth all year long. The coal is no longer part of life, but anyway, the wish is the same!
