cheapest non-albergue place to stay in Leon

We bus into Leon. As we will not have started walking (and indeed intend to bus to Astorga) AND would like to stay two nights to give us a full day to look round town, we need to stay somewhere non-albergue-ish. Any recommendations? We do not need fancy - a mattress and long drop toilet will suffice (although I guess that sounds more like an albergue than anything else!)

In the above thread, I personally recommended Hotel Paris. Not the cheapest but they really take a good care of you and the location is great.

If you try booking.com and venere.com they not only give a list of many hotels but you can check by your specific dates and book on-line. A good idea if there are many pilgrims around. You have to give your card number in case of a 'no-show' but you do not pay 'up front'. Also you need to watch the cancellation policy, although most are for up to 48 hours before arrival there are a few non cancellation offers around at the moment. There is also a hostals site which works similarly. If I can find the address I'll edit this.
We booked our first nights while still in the UK, then on Camino had a list of phone numbers, from the CSJ guide, to call for next night when needed.

There is a huge Youth Hostel in Leon (and two others not so big).
All are a little more upmarket that the required mattress and drop toilet!

I stayed in this one in May and it cost €40 for a double and is fairly central, check it on Google Maps. As you need 11 places it could still work out expensive but its worth a phone call. With your numbers an albergue might be the best option cost wise.

When I book ahead I use hostelworld.com or hotels.com. You can get good deals with both. With hotels.com, for every 10 nights you book you get one free which is nice. Many times you can book a room with 4-6 beds for cheaper than a dorm in a hostel.

In Leon the Monasterio de las Benedictinas (Sta María de Carbajal) located on the Plaza Santa María del Camino has both a well known pilgrim albergue and a less well known Hospederia next door. The Hospederia with private facilities caters to both individual travelers and groups. Here is their English web site link -- http://www.hospederiapax.com/. Although I have always stayed at the pilgrim albergue the neighboring Hospederia looked MOST comfortable. Perhaps it might provide accommodation for your family group.
