There has been a small increase in the number of pilgrims receiving the Compostela in August. In 2007 there were 27140 and this year the number is 29723.

Comparisons with other months:

March 1.680 in 2007: 5.327 in 2008
April 8.112 in 2007: 5.655 in 2008
May 12.898 in 2007: 15.983 in 2008 (3085)
June 15.157 in 2007: 15.841 in 2008 ( 694)
July 20.108 in 2007: 20.982 in 2008 ( 874)
August 27.140 in 2007: 29.723. in 2008 (2583)

NB: In 2007 they celebrated Holy Week (Easter) during the month of April, but this year it was in March. That is why they received less pilgrims in April this year and 5327 pilgrims during the month of March this compared with 1680 pilgrims received in March 2007.

Excluding March and April, the month with the largest increase is May. This was reflected by the many reports of overcrowding in the albergues during the month of May and the pilgrims' office in St Jean Pied de Port recording the highest numbers (sometimes over 600 a day) pilgrims registering with them during May.

The stats for pilgrims registering at St Jean in May and July are:

May 2004 - 6794: 2005 - 7158: 2006 -7721: 2007 - 10164: 2008 - 11494

July 2004 - 12814: 2005 - 14485: 2006 - 15248: 2007 - 18870: 2008 - 20537
